The Five Highest Paid Players In The Championship This Season

The world of finance in football has increased heavily in recent years, with many clubs having major financial success or failiure.

The financial landscape of the EFL Championship changes and the clubs involved changes drastically each season.

This includes the wages offered to the players involved.

With that being said, let’s look at the five highest earners across the league, according to Football League World.

5 – Kalvin Phillips

Sheffield United loaned in Kalvin Phillips form Manchester City in January, making him the club’s highest earner on £45,000 a week.

However, despite these high wages, Phillips has been unable to make any impact at Bramall Lane, only making three appearances.

It’s unclear whether Chris Wilder will want to keep Phillips at the club next season, however his performances have not been what was expected when he signed.

4 – John Lundstram

Hull City have been under transfer restrictions this season, however one of their summer recruits is still their highest earner.

John Lundstram joined the Tigers on loan from Turkish side Trabzonspor, and is earing £45,000 a week.

Despite a red card recently against his former side Sheffield United, Lundstram has been a vital player for Sergej Jakirovic.

Lundstram has helped his side reach 6th in the table, with a playoff finish being highly likely.

3 – Finn Azaz

Irish midfielder Finn Azaz joined Southampton this summer from Middlesborough and became the league’s third highest earner, making £50,000 per week.

Azaz has been a top performer for the Saints, contributing ten goals in 40 appearances.

The Irishman has helped his team reach 5th in the league as they hope to earn promotion through the playoffs.

2 – Matt Targett

Another loanee on the list, Middlesborough’s highest earner is Matt Targett, who is currently at the club on loan from Newcastle United.

The defender currently earns £60,000 per week.

The 30-year-old has been a staple in their backline as the club currently sit 4th and look to earn promotion back to the Premier League.

However, this is looking more unlikely each week as Middlesborough are currently winless in their last six matches.

1 – Harry Winks

The title of the highest paid player in the league belongs to Leicester City midfielder Harry Winks.

However, despite such wages being on offer, Winks has been unable to help his side escape the relegation zone, with the Foxes currently sitting 23rd and four points off safety.

If the Foxes do get relegated to League One next season, it’s highly likely that Winks departs the club, as Leicester will not be able to pay his high wages and survive financially.
