League Two’s Five Best Games So Far This Season

League Two now finds itself narrowly over the half-way mark, with promotion hopefuls establishing themselves early, alongside clubs fighting to steady themselves following low-quality performances in the opening months.

Here are League Two’s five standout fixtures from the opening half of the campaign:

5. Grimsby 7-1 Cheltenham – 27th September 2025

Grimsby’s 7-1 hammering of Cheltenham Town certainly had the goal factor; however, narrowly misses out on the top three due to its one-sided nature.

Despite Cheltenham’s loanee Isaac Hutchinson striking first, two quick-fire red cards delivered to Harry Pell and Lee Angol spiraled the game out of control, leading to Grimsby bagging five additional goals.

Following on from Jamie Walker’s first-half brace, goals were spread between Jaze Kabio, Jayden Sweeney, Charles Vernam and Evan Khouri, capping off a memorable day for Mariner’s supporters.

Undeniably, it wasn’t Cheltenham’s day, cementing the basement club at the time into further misery.

4. Colchester 6-2 Chesterfield – 4th October 2025

An autumn clash between two playoff chasing sides, saw eight goals, as Colchester’s emphatic victory catalysed the beginning of their upward turn in form.

Jack Payne’s first-half hattrick sealed Colchester United’s first League hattrick since January 2017, when Kurtis Guthrie bagged a hattrick against Carlisle United, setting up an emphatic first half with five goals.

Colchester’s front four of Harry Anderson, Jack Payne, Kyreece Lisbie and Micah Mbick linked up nicely and solely accounted for the team’s goal contributions.

For Chesterfield, it was arguably their most shambolic performance of the season, however James Berry’s incredible consolation goal was a form of light on an overall bleak day.

3. Harrogate 3-3 Grimsby – 9th August 2025

Something particularly interesting seemingly occurs during this fixture. 24/25’s edition saw Grimsby’s central midfielder score from within his own half, whilst this season’s rendition featured a second half with six goals and a last-minute equaliser!

At the interval, few spectators would have expected a particularly compelling encounter, with the match remaining goalless.

By contrast, the second half flipped the switch, with Harrogate entering the final ten minutes with a two-goal deficit, only to concede a quick eight-minute double at the hands of Grimsby’s Harvey Rodgers and Jaze Kabia.

The latter came in the 93rd minute, sending the away end into pandemonium!

2. Salford 4-3 Crawley – 29th December 2025

On paper, it’s fair to say that Salford against Crawley doesn’t exactly enthrall many but nevertheless proved doubters wrong with a seven-goal edge of your seat thriller!

Finding themselves in contrasting positions in the League Two table, Crawley defied expectations and led on two separate occasions throughout.

Even so, Salford’s frontline repeatedly proved to be a thorn in the Crawley defensive setup, retaliating with a pair of goals from Josh Austerfield and Kallum Cesay (separated by just one minute) to seal a dramatic finish to this topsy-turvy encounter.

Furthermore, Adebola Olowu redeemed himself, following his 33rd minute own-goal breaking the deadlock, immediately responding by firing a curling effort into the top corner to draw Salford level in first-half stoppage time

1.Salford 4-3 Colchester – 13th December 2025

As much as I’d like to forget this ever happened, I cannot deny this fixture was characterised by significant last-minute goalmouth action.

Coincidentally, the second 4-3 result from The Ammies to feature in this listicle, Salford’s fight back from 3-1 down highlights just how high-quality their frontlines displays have consistently been. Season ticket holders are undeniably getting their money’s worth at the Peninsula Stadium!

Luke Garbutt’s 92nd minute wonder strike sealed the three points, curling into the back of the net from an incredibly tight angle. After a quick four-minute double from Ellis Iandolo and Arthur Read, Salford seemed down and out, however retaliated immensely, sealing this fixture as the number one game of the season through Fabio Borini’s penalty and the Luke Garbutt thunderbolt.
