EXCLUSIVE: Lee Grant Set To Be Announced as Walsall Head Coach

The Lower Tiers understands that Lee Grant will be appointed as Walsall’s new Head Coach and an announcement could be as early as today.

The Saddlers have been on the search for a permanent successor to Mat Sadler since his dismissal in March following a poor run of form.

Walsall were four points clear at the top of the League Two table in December but a run of two wins in 14 games since boxing day forced the club hierarchies hand.

The board held their faith in Mat Sadler despite somehow not managing to win promotion to League One in the 2024/25 season.

In the beginning of 2025, Walsall were 14 points clear of the Play-Off places in League Two and looked set to win the title by a landslide after sitting pretty at the top of the table for 119 days.

However, just three wins from their final 20 games of the season, saw them just miss out on an automatic promotion place thanks to Bradford City’s talisman Antoni Sarcevic scoring a last-minute winner against Fleetwood Town to clinch third place on the last game of the season.

Walsall went on to lose the Play-Off final 1-0 against Wimbledon in what was a devastating and unprecedented second-half of the season.

Those psychological scars have appeared to remain after a less dramatic fall from top spot again, this season. The need for a fresh start was the only answer to the issue.

Lee Grant – Underrated

The former Manchester United goalkeeper was appointed as Huddersfield Town’s head coach in May 2025 with the expectation of him being the answer to the West Yorkshire sides problems.

The Terriers are a club that desperately want to get back into the Championship and appear to have no patience in doing so resulting in the sacking of Lee Grant in January despite the club sitting in the League One Play-Off places.

A win percentage of 47% in his first managerial job is enough to show that Lee Grant is capable of becoming a successful manager and Walsall are the club looking to exploit that potential.
