After a very disappointing performance from Chelsea on Tuesday night, in which they slumped to a 3-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium, a club statement was, by no surprise, released from Chelsea announcing the sacking of Liam Rosenior after just four months.
The Blues sit eighth in the Premier League table, having not scored in five consecutive Premier League matches, their worst run since 1912.
Chelsea’s official statement read: “Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior.”
“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to place on record our gratitude to Liam and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.
“This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.”
The club then added that Under-21s manager Calum McFarlane will take charge until the end of the season, having managed a respectable draw at the Etihad with title-chasing Manchester City, and a somewhat unlucky draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage, where for most of the game, Chelsea played with 10 men.
Rosenior joined Hull City in November 2022 after replacing Andy Dawson, after the club had only 6 wins in 19 games at the start of the 2022/23 season.
After his appointment, they lost six in their next 27, but only scored just over a goal a game with only 30. In his second season, Hull finished seventh, scoring 68 goals and only failing to score in nine out of their 46. His Points-per-Game (PPG) ended up as 35%, with 1.4 points per game in 72 league games.
Similarly at Derby, where at the start of the 22/23 season he became interim manager, in his 12 games in charge of Derby County he lost just 3 in League One.
He also guided them to the Carabao Cup third round, however he did not get to manage it due to the club bringing in Paul Warne. His points per game ratio in 12 games at the Rams is his highest professional tally ever, with 58%/1.9 points per game.
So, fans are now left wondering how Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea side ended up failing to score in six of their last seven in all competitions, especially with the money that Chelsea’s owners BlueCo have spent.
The Premier League side are now set to begin life without Liam Rosenior as they prepare for their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley against Leeds on Sunday.
