Lewis Montsma has left Lincoln City, singing for Dundee FC in the Scottish topflight. Montsma joined the Imps in 2020 from FC Dordrecht and quickly established himself as a regular starter.
During the 2020/21 season, he made 49 appearances for the club, scoring an impressive 9 times from central defence. His impressive performances during that season helped Lincoln to the League One playoff final although they would ultimately come up short.
In the seasons since then, Montsma’s game time has been severely hampered by injuries. He suffered cruciate ligament injuries in January 2022 and March 2023 which kept him out for over two years combined.
This season, he has only made four appearances. Two came in the EFL Trophy, one in the FA Cup and one in the EFL Cup.
Sonny Bradley and Thomas Hamer have been Michael Skubala’s first choice centre back pairing, leaving no room for Montsma in the starting XI. With Lincoln currently 2nd in League One, having conceded the joint 2nd least goals, it is a partnership which won’t be changed anytime soon.
Even when Lincoln have gone to a back three, it has been Ryler Towler who has been selected, not Montsma. With Deji Elerewe recently joining from Bromley, Montsma’s gametime was going to be even more limited.
As for Dundee FC, out of the 12 teams in the Scottish Premiership, they find themselves in 9th place. Only the bottom two sides have conceded more goals than the Dee so far this season, something the Dutchman has clearly been brought in to address.
Although the Dark Blues aren’t exactly prolific at the other end of the field either. Only St. Mirren have found the back of the net on fewer occasions.
Montsma has signed a contract with Dundee FC until the end of the season with an option to extend.
