As Middlesbrough head into their final three games of the season against Sheffield Wednesday, Watford, and Wrexham, Boro’s season on a whole bas been above average from what most would have expected before a ball was kicked in August.
Since February, Boro’s season has derailed somewhat because of the side’s home form which has taken a bizarre dip, no win in the last six home games. The last one came on 31st January v Norwich City In a 1-0 win.
In the last six home games Boro have only scored three times. The statistics from the last six matches are:
Boro have struggled to break down low blocks against teams at the bottom of the league in Oxford United, Leicester City, and Charlton Athletic. Mid-table side Bristol City, top of the league side Millwall and bottom of the league side Portsmouth.
Boro’s season was disrupted again back in November with the departure of Rob Edwards to relegation threatened side Wolverhampton Wanderers who decided to down tools with Boro after the 1-1 draw away at Leicester City.
He was swiftly replaced with highly rated Swedish manager Kim Hellberg from Allsvensken side, Hammarby.
Hellberg has collected 43 points so far since been appointed as Boro Manager including four wins in a row when he was appointed against Derby County, Hull City, Charlton Athletic, and Queens Park Rangers.
In terms of awards, we going to award a Bronze, Silver and Gold Award.
Adilson Malanda only joined the team in January and has shown exactly what he can do and has been a huge addition to the team with his presence and calmness on the ball.
Hayden Hackney runs the show with starting attacks and keeping the ball moving and will go onto to play for a top team and for England National Team.
Aidan Morris never stops running and works tirelessly for the team and never gives up. Other players who have shown glimpses are Alex Bangura and Leo Castledine when fit.
A lot of signings the club made in my opinion have mainly focused on the future who can be sold on for a profit like Kaly Sene and Leo Castledine.
Not buying a centre forward has really affected Boro’s end to the season since January, Tommy Conway mainly plays as a left winger for the team whilst David Strelec has only just recently started to find form.
The players that the club could build a team around next season are Alan Browne, Jeremy Sarmiento and Matt Targett if signed permanently and a potential starting eleven may include players like Dael Fry, Alfie Jones, Adilson Malanda and Callum Brittain.
If Boro can end the season well, the club still have a huge chance of gaining promotion automatically or via the play offs.
Whatever happens, Boro fans should be happy with how this season has panned out considering how it ended last time out missing out on a play-off place on the final day away at Coventry City.
