Championship strugglers Oxford United have sacked manager Gary Rowett, with the side currently in the relegation zone.
With just one win in ten, the club have swung the axe over the boss who himself led Oxford to survival and a second season in the Championship last season, after taking over The U’s when they were a point above the relegation zone in 2024/25.
In a statement, the club said: Oxford United can confirm the departure of Gary Rowett as Men’s First Team Head Coach. Assistant Head Coach, Mark Sale, has also left the Club.
Gary was appointed in December 2024 and helped secure Championship safety in the Club’s first season at this level in 25 years.
Chairman, Grant Ferguson, said: “Gary joined during a challenging period and deserves immense credit for the hard work and leadership that saw us retain our Championship status last season.
“However, following a disappointing run of results, we have had to take this difficult decision in the best interests of the Club.
“On behalf of the Board, I would like to place on record our thanks to Gary and Mark for their contribution to the Football Club and to wish them all the best for the future.”
The process to appoint a new Head Coach is already underway and the Club will provide an update in due course.
In the interim, Craig Short will lead First Team preparations alongside Chris Hackett and Lewis Price.
It appears a candidate has already emerged to replace Rowett.
Michael Beale is in the frame to become the next manager at the Kassam, according to Alan Nixon.
The former Rangers and Sunderland manager is currently available and has admirers within the Oxford board.
Beale was a successful manager in the second tier before moving to Rangers, where both moves went poorly.
Oxford United believe the next manager must get more out of their players – and see Beale fit for this purpose.
Is he the best candidate for the job?
