Cardiff City’s Out-of-Contract Star Signs New Deal

Cardiff City have received a huge boost ahead of their Championship return after confirming Perry Ng has signed a new contract until the summer of 2028.

The 29-year-old was one of three key first-team players due to be out of contract this summer, alongside Ryan Wintle and Joel Bagan, with supporters growing increasingly concerned that all three could depart on free transfers.

However, the Bluebirds have moved to tie down one of their most consistent performers, handing Brian Barry-Murphy’s side a significant boost ahead of the club’s return to the second tier.

This comes just ten days after another member of Cardiff’s promotion-winning squad extended his stay, with loanee Nathan Trott signing permanently from FC Copenhagen.

A Key Figure for Cardiff

Since arriving from Crewe Alexandra in January 2021, Ng has developed into one of Cardiff’s most reliable performers.

The former Crewe captain has made 233 appearances for the Bluebirds, scoring 15 goals from right-back.

His consistency has earned him admiration amongst supporters, becoming a fan favourite and winning the club’s Player of the Season award in consecutive Championship campaigns in 2022/23 and 2023/24.

During the 2023/24 season, when Cardiff finished 12th under Erol Bulut, Ng ended as the club’s joint top scorer with six goals, level with Karlan Grant.

Integral to Barry-Murphy’s Promotion-Winning Side

Ng once again proved his importance during Cardiff’s League One promotion-winning campaign.

The right-back contributed six goals and four assists in 35 league appearances, producing the best output season of his career.

Alongside his attacking prowess, Ng’s leadership and defensive stability made him a cornerstone of Barry-Murphy’s system.

Cardiff’s Number 38 also developed an excellent partnership down the right flank with winger Ollie Tanner, with the pair becoming the Bluebirds’ most dangerous attacking combination.

The 29-year-old played the fourth-most league minutes as Cardiff finished second in League One, with only Nathan Trott, Ryan Wintle, and Joel Bagan featuring more.

Ng did not make his first league start until September’s 1-1 draw against Stockport County at Edgeley Park after recovering from a pre-season injury.

18-year-old Ronan Kpakio impressed in his absence, but Ng’s consistency and experience soon saw him reclaim the right-back berth.

Despite not having played much early in the season, Ng admitted in October that he was the “happiest he’d ever been” at Cardiff. A clear indication of how much he was enjoying Barry-Murphy’s possession-based style and the success of a young team.

Academy graduate Kpakio now has the opportunity to continue learning from one of Cardiff’s most tactically astute and dependable performers, a player the club would have found extremely difficult to replace.

Perry Ng Reacts to New Deal

Speaking after signing his new contract, Ng said:

“I’m delighted to have signed this new deal. I’ve loved my time at the club so far.

“I’ve grown a lot in my five-and-a-half years in South Wales. I feel like I’ve made a home for myself here.

“I’d like to take this moment to thank the City fans for their support. I’m excited now for myself and this group to take on the challenge the Championship brings.”

Another Major Summer Statement

Ng’s contract extension represents another major statement of intent from Cardiff City.

After already securing the services of Nathan Trott on a permanent deal, retaining one of the club’s standout performers further strengthens the foundations of Barry-Murphy’s squad.

The 29-year-old’s experience, leadership, and quality at both ends of the pitch will be vital as Cardiff look to re-establish themselves in the second tier.

Will Ryan Wintle and Joel Bagan Follow?

Attention will now turn to the futures of Ryan Wintle and Joel Bagan, who also remain out of contract this summer, but offers are understood to have been made to both.

Both players were permanent fixtures during Cardiff’s promotion-winning campaign, recording the second and third most league minutes respectively.

Supporters will hope Ng’s decision to commit his future in South Wales creates a domino effect with both following suit, and further important announcements to come.

For now, Cardiff have ensured that one of their most dependable servants this decade will remain in the capital for at least another two years – a significant boost as preparations for the Championship continue to ramp up.
