Peterborough United agree a deal to sign Evan Weir from Walsall

Peterborough United have reportedly agreed a deal to sign former Walsall centre-back Evan Weir on a free transfer as reported by Pete O’Rourke. Weir’s contract expires next month and has been released by the Saddlers in their retained list.

Posh already signed one Irish centre-back last summer acquiring the services of David Okagbue. Weir has barely played the second half of the League Two campaign just gone – only starting just 11 times since the turn of the year.

Weir has made 56 appearances for the Saddlers scoring four goals and assisting nine times. Chairman Darragh MacAnthony hinted that Posh had signed a 24-year-old defender from League Two in February time on his Hard Truth podcast. Many thought it was Bromley left-back Idris Odutayo but it seems to be Evan Weir is that man who Posh have been chasing.

The young Irishmen had an outstanding tenure at Drogheda United and was signed by Walsall back in June 2024. The left footed 24-year-old has struggled for game time in the second half of this season with Walsall fans claiming he may have downed tools.

Will Weir be a good fit for Posh?

Posh desperately needed defensive reinforcements at the end of the last season. The loss of Tom Lees is also a massive blow to the Posh defence. Posh in total had 13 different centre-back partnerships in all competitions last season which is always going to cause issues. Without Lees Posh picked up six points all season long which shows how much he is going to be missed by Posh.

Weir does already have experience of playing with fellow Irishman David Okagbue however, he has only played 44 games of EFL Football. It has been made clear to Posh fans that Weir will be pushing young Harley Mills and challenging Rio Adebisi. However, will Weir’s inexperience of EFL football be a hinderance to Posh?

How does this affect Posh’s transfer targets?

After looking into what Posh desperately need this summer Posh may not be looking at anymore left-back options. This is due to having the services of potentially Evan Weir, Adebisi and Harley Mills. However, Posh may look to strengthen the backline more with a centre-back still a very sought after option after failing to replace Ronnie Edwards two years ago.

Posh have transfer listed young George Nevett and have also lost Peter Kioso after his loan expired from Oxford United. Losing three defensive players in a team that shifted 68 goals last season is something that clearly needs to be rectified.
