Scottish giants Hibernian are chasing Oxford United defender Stephan Negru, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke
Hibs are looking to strengthen their options at the back and have targeted the 23-year-old Irishman.
Negru started at Irish club Shelbourne where he made six appearances, scoring the only goal of his career so far.
He then signed for current club Oxford United in 2023 and has played 20 times racking up almost 1500 minutes for the U’s.
His development has been helped by loans with League Two Salford City and Bristol Rovers, where he has impressed for both sides.
His loan with Rovers has now ended and he’s returned to Matt Bloomfield’s side.
The U’s are fighting for survival this season. Currently, they sit 23rd in the Championship and are five points from safety, as new manager Matt Bloomfield looks to get his sides season jump-started.
Oxford United have taken five points from a possible twelve recently, which includes an impressive 2-1 win over Leicester City.
The likes of Myles Peart-Harris, Jamie McDonnell and Jamie Donley have already joined the Kassam Stadium outfit.
Hibs currently sit fifth in the Scottish Premier League, as David Gray looks to add to an already quality squad, Dane Scarlett, Junior Hoilett and Dwight Gayle to name but a few.
Speaking to Rovers’ media at the time of Negru signing, head coach Darrell Clarke said: “I am happy to welcome Stephan to the club.
He is an aggressive and strong centre-back who will add presence to our defensive options.“
“Stephan has shown already what he can offer at this level over the last season and we’re looking forward to working with him over the coming campaign.”
Director of Football Ricky Martin added: “Stephan is a strong, front-footed centre-back who fits the profile of character have been looking to recruit in this transfer window.
