Sheffield United have released the list of players that the club are retaining and releasing for the 2026/27 season of the EFL Championship.
While many fans were hopeful before the release, the decisions outlined in the list have left a lot of those same fans puzzled, and a lot less optimistic for next season.
Many promising players will not be playing their game at Bramall Lane next season in order for the club to abide by financial regulations.
But which decisions have left fans worrying the most?
Arguably the most puzzling decision, Jairo Riedewald is set to depart from Sheffield United, despite being one of the stand out stars for Chris Wilder.
The Dutchman initially signed on a short term deal, before extending his contract in December, making it appear that he was a part of Wilder’s long term plans.
However, it’s reported that Riedewald has departed the club to make room for a return for fellow midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
This comes as a surprise as Riedewald has outshone Phillips in most statistics, yet he is the one departing the club.
While it’s far too early to judge this decision, Blades fans are certainly sceptical so far.
Tyler Bindon has certainly impressed whilst on loan at the Blades this season from Nottingham Forest.
Chris Wilder has also had high praised for the New Zealand international, making fans believe that he may be brought in permanently.
However, it looks like the partnership between him and Japhet Tanganga was only short-term and won’t be carried forward to next season.
This marks the second starting centre-back in two seasons to be brought in for just a season after Harry Souttar was brought in from Leicester City last season.
Blades fans will be wanting a permanent replacement for Bindon for the start of next season to add some much needed stability to the backline.
Another main takeaway from this list is the serious lack of players, particularly the more experienced ones.
Only 15 players over the age of 24 remain at Bramall Lane, meaning there is quite a lack of experience ahead of the coming season.
Blades fans will be hoping they can bring in some proven players to add to reinforcements in case of injuries.
However, financial regulations may limit the Blades in who they can bring in and the amount of players they can recruit.
If they wish to improve on their 13th place finish this season, recruitments should be imminent for United.
