Swindon Town Boss Slams FA Following Expulsion from Vertu Trophy

Swindon Town have been expelled from this season’s Vertu Trophy after fielding two ineligible players in their win over Luton Town.

Swindon Town

Swindon Town have been expelled from this season’s Vertu Trophy after fielding two ineligible players in their Round of 16 win over Luton Town earlier this month, with the FA and EFL confirming the decision following an independent disciplinary review.

The Robins had originally won the match 2‑1, but the disciplinary commission found that captain Ollie Clarke, who was serving a seven-game suspension active from 19 December for highly violating acts of foul play against Cardiff City players last August.

Aaron Drinan, who was also the subject of controversy, came on as a second-half substitute was also the subject of controversy, despite not being named on the official teamsheet, both players were ineligible.

Swindon were fined £40,000, with £20,000 suspended, and Clarke received a one-match ban, meaning he missed the club’s home victory over Barrow last weekend.

The commission warned that the suspended portion of the fine would become payable if the club fields another ineligible player before the end of the 2026/27 season.

Clarke’s Ban

Clarke, had received the seven-game suspension starting 19 December after being found guilty of committing highly violating acts of foul play on two opponents during a Carabao Cup tie against Cardiff in August.

The Swindon midfielder admitted the incidents but insisted both were unintentional, a claim that the FA rejected.

They had previously argued that the FA disciplinary portal did not indicate the suspension applied to Vertu Trophy matches.

Drinan Error

Aaron Drinan replaced Ollie Palmer at half-time against Luton, despite not being on the official teamsheet, causing a stoppage while officials clarified the situation.

Swindon argue that the match officials should have confirmed selections before kick-off, emphasising that the error was not entirely the club’s fault.

A final ruling on Drinan’s eligibility was pending before the expulsion decision.

Holloway’s Reaction

Holloway expressed his outrage ahead of the Barrow game last weekend at the timing and handling of Clarke’s suspension:

“We had a terrible blow when I was told at five o’clock that my captain couldn’t play after we prepared with him in the team. It’s absolutely disgusting.”

He also criticized FA and EFL officials in no uncertain terms:

“It’s a siege mentality in my head now, absolutely, totally and utterly. And if Luton go through, good luck to you. We beat you fair and poxy square.”

“I’m not having our club secretary dragged through the coals, left, right and centre. You have a look at yourselves first. I know how wrong you are, you cowards.”

“I’ve rung the League Managers Association to complain. I think it’s unprofessional.”

“They want to fine me? Good! They want to ban me? Good! Do it.”

“Have a look at yourselves, every single one of you. It’s absolutely disgusting. And whether I get another game or not, I don’t really care anymore.”

Swindon’s Defense

Swindon Town released a statement defending their actions:

“The Club’s legal team and representatives strongly contested the charges and presented detailed submissions at the hearing.”

We are satisfied that our position was robustly defended and that we stood up for both the Club and our player. “

The decision is frustrating given the strength of the submissions made on our behalf and the circumstances surrounding the case.”

The club also said they would reflect, learn from the situation, and continue to meet the highest standards in the future, with their priority remaining with players, staff, and supporters.

Impact on the Vertu Trophy

Swindon’s expulsion hands Luton a place in the quarter-finals, where they will now face Plymouth Argyle. The date of the tie is yet to be confirmed after a request from Plymouth.

Looking Ahead

Swindon’s 1‑0 midweek victory over Harrogate Town marked a second consecutive league win and a positive step after a four-game losing run.

Despite the disciplinary blow, Holloway has vowed to fully back his players and staff as they move forward in League Two.
