Millwall are set to have a very busy summer. The Lions are set to play their ninth consecutive season in the Championship.
This following a bitterly disappoint Play-off semi final defeat to Hull City.
After a third place finish this season, the Lions would like to emulate the likes of Coventry City who turned previous play-off woes into an emphatic title winning campaign this time round.
In order to do this though might require quite a few new arrivals. These are three suggestions that would help the Lions in that charge.
Ipswich Town have been promoted to the Premier league, and as such much of their squad will likely be replaced.
The future of Jack Clarke at Ipswich therefore is uncertain. Particularly so given his lack of success in his previous Premier League stint.
The Englishman mainly operated down the left-flank, and chipped in with 16 goals and two assists last season. With Tom Watson and Thierno Ballo’s loans expiring, Clarke would be a perfect fit in replacement.
Clarke has been linked with moves away throughout the closing stages of the season. Sheffield United the team most prominently so.
Jack Clarke would be an ambitious move for Millwall, and would certainly act as a statement of intent. The Ipswich man would not come cheap for the Lions, given his new Premier League status and his impressive campaign last season.
But, with a potential windfall from Femi Azeez and Tristan Crama, it’s certainly the sort of signing Millwall could consider.
Stevenage’s League One play-off campaign was ended sourly in the semi-final versus Stockport County. The side are one of the smallest to compete at that level, drastically overperforming their budget. However, the low budget of the Hertfordshire side may make it difficult to keep hold of their key players.
Harvey White has seriously impressed over the course of his three year stint at the Boro. Last campaign was his finest, with 11 goal contributions while mainly operating from defensive midfield.
He looks like a complete player at the division below, and it seems the right time for the Tottenham Hotspur academy graduate to move up a division. With Billy Mitchell’s contract situation uncertain, White could be a very strong replacement for Alex Neil’s Millwall.
Consistently over the past few seasons, Millwall have struggled in regards to scoring goals regularly. Despite their third place finish last campaign, the Lions only scored 64 goals – the least of any team in the top eight.
Mihailo Ivanovic was unfortunately unable to live up to the expectations on him in pre-season. Josh Coburn seriously impressed but missed much of the season through injury, and Macaulay Langstaff has never seemed like a prominent goalscorer at Championship level.
With Tottenham’s Premier League survival confirmed, Lankshear could be put up for loan again.
After his successful stint at Oxford United last term, there will be many sides wanting to sign him up. He scored eleven goals for relegated Oxford, and his all round play looks brilliantly suited to the Lions style of play.
His intensity as well as strength will suit the Lion’s high pressing tactics very well, and offer a different dimension to what their current options do up front.
