Watford continued their run of winless games to six with a 1-0 loss away to Southampton on Saturday Lunchtime.
The result sees the Hornets without a goal in just over five hours of football, with their last goal away at Blackburn, scored by Edo Kayembe
Watford had a large share of the ball against Southampton with 11 shots and an XG of 0.68
The Hornets looked threatening in the wide positions with Maamaa and Chakvetadze creating plenty of opportunities; however, they really failed to do anything with them.
The same applies against Hull on Tuesday, Watford dominated the ball with 60% and 11 shots; however, only 2 shots on target with an XG of 1.1.
The holdup play seems to be a real worry for the Hornets as well throughout a transition to attack.
We have seen Luca Kjerrumgaard dropped in recent games due to a lack of holdup play within his game.
However, since Doumbia has come in, Watford have struggled to get him into the game due to playing crosses into the box, which suits Kjerumgard because of his height.
The Hornets need to try to change their approach to suit Doumbia, with balls in behind or a low cross to try to take advantage of the young forward.
Watford have plenty of quality in attack with the likes of Othmane Maamma receiving interest from top Premier League clubs.
And Nestory Irankunda, who has been bright since joining in the summer from Bayern Munich.
However, it feels like, due to being watched by top clubs, players like Maamma try to do too much instead of doing the simple pass.
For example, at times the young Moroccan has a tendency to try a back heel or flick it over the opponent’s head instead of just taking on his man.
This often leads to a poor end product, such as a blocked cross, an easy clearance or a comfortable save.
If players such as Maamma were dropped, it would allow them to re-focus and learn to do the basics instead of the fancy and present an opportunity for players such as Kwadwo Baah, who has fallen out of favour so far this season.
Watford are due to host Preston in their 3rd successive away trip and will be hoping they can end the long goal drought with a win to play-off rivals.
