When Can Coventry City Be Championship Winners?

With promotion almost secured to the Premier League, there is just one thing left for Coventry City to complete – the Championship title.

The Sky Blues sit on 84 points after 41 games, with rivals behind all on 72 points with 41 played, bar Ipswich who have two games in hand.

This means that the maximum amount of points Middlesborough and Millwall can achieve is 87, three off the Sky Blues current total – Ipswich can get 93 but have to play Boro so therefore it is impossible for 87 and 93 to be met.

How is the Championship title race likely to unfold?

Ultimately, Frank Lampard’s side require ten points from the final five games to mathematically become Championship title winners.

However, that means Ipswich need to win every game – including fixtures away at Norwich and Southampton, as well as home to Middlesborough, which in short is unlikely.

If the Sky Blues continue their good form, then they are expected to be champions either at home to Portsmouth on 21st April or at home to Wrexham on the 26th April.

How can it be won against Portsmouth?

If the Sky Blues beat Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn, that leaves them on 90 points heading into the game against Portsmouth, already promoted.

However, the Tractor Boys have three games before Coventry’s game against Pompey. Norwich (a), Portsmouth (a) and Middlesborough (h).

If they pick up between 5/7 points here, they would be on around 77-79 mark, either 13/11 behind Coventry with four games to go, meaning there is a chance it is won against Portsmouth.

If they win all three then they move onto 81, nine behind Lampard’s side with four games to go, compared to Coventry’s three to go.

Therefore, if the Championship leaders also beat Portsmouth, regardless of Ipswich’s score, they would require one point from the final three to win the league.

How can it be won at Wrexham? (More likely)

Regardless of how Ipswich do in their final seven games (two in hand), the Sky Blues need three wins and a draw to confirm the title, which would mean it is secured against Wrexham.

This is only if Ipswich drop points however. If Ipswich pick up 12 points from their next four games that leaves them on 84 points with three to go, six behind Coventry if they win every game.

Despite this, it is unlikely Ipswich win every game so if the Sky Blues continue their good form, they will secure the title against Wrexham, if they drop points prior to this game.

An unlikely scenario is where it goes to the last day away at Watford, but no one wants that as due to a limited away end, not many fans would witness the trophy lift.
