3 Managers Who Are Captivating Choices To Replace Matt Bloomfield At Luton Town

Manager Matt Bloomfield was let go by League One side Luton Town today. We take a look at 3 possible candidates to replace him.

After being relegated to League One last season and having a poor start to the campaign with Luton only picking up 16 points, they currently sit 11th. Luton Town have decided to part ways with manager Matt Bloomfield.

Bloomfield joined the Hatters in January for an undisclosed fee from fellow League One side Wycombe Wanderers.

Join me in this article as I explore three potential candidates for the role.

Luke Williams

Luke Williams is one of the top candidates for the job. He is currently unemployed after being sacked by Swansea in February 2025, after not performing, and the side picking up poor results. I think that Williams’ joining Luton will give the club a fresh start and the players and fans a boost, especially after the relegations that occurred in quick succession.

Also, his possession-dominant and attacking style of play would suit the Hatters in our opinion. The 43-year-old holds a lot of experience within League Two as he worked at Notts County and Swindon Town, but with him having previously worked at Swansea in the Championship, he will be a strong candidate in League One.

His largest achievement was at Notts in the 2022/23 season when he gained promotion to League Two. Even though he was sacked by Swansea, he will be more than capable of picking up results in League One, so Williams is one of the top candidates for the role.

Ian Evatt

The second candidate to watch out for in this managerial race is in the form of Ian Evatt. As he holds a possession based style and most importantly, an attacking style of play, which would suit the Hatters’ style of play.

As well as this, a huge factor of Evatt being one of the favourites is that he has experience in League One with Bolton Wanderers, as well as experience in League Two, with Bolton winning promotion to League One in the 2020/21 season prior to his departure by mutual consent in January 2025.

So the experience that Evatt holds will be beneficial to Luton, especially because the goal was promotion at the start of the campaign, as he holds the correct amount of experience from his time managing Bolton in League One.

However, the 43 year old is also a favourite for the Blackpool job with the side sacking Steve Bruce and Evatt being a previous player for the side. In my opinion, there is still a chance that the former Bolton man decides to join the London-based side, with his attacking style more suited to the Hatters.

Richie Wellens

The final candidate who is on our list is in the form of the current Leyton Orient manager, Richie Wellens, who joined the side in March 2022 after leaving Doncaster Rovers in December 2021.

Some could argue that Orient have started the season poorly, with them sitting 18th on 11 points and the side on a run of poor defeats.

Leyton Orient were within a chance of winning promotion to the Championship last season, but in the playoff final they lost 1-0 to Charlton Athletic.

His style of play is possession based and he likes to attack with an emphasis on playing out from the back.

I think a move to the Hatters will give the 45 year old a fresh start and Luton the ability to go reach their goal of promotion, which they set out at the start of the season.

I do think Wellens is a popular manager within League One, and as a result of him still being at Leyton Orient. Luton will have to pay a fee, which they will be capable of doing as they hold parachute payments.
