The EFL this weekend: The lower tiers never fail to bring you the best and worst moments in English football. With 72 teams going at it every weekend it can be incredibly hard to keep up with.
From the good, to the bad, to the downright funny, here’s five things you may have missed from the EFL this weekend.
Hull City’s Own Goal Calamity
Hull City hosted Luton Town in the EFL this weekend. In a game dubbed as relegation six-pointer in the Championship. Luton, the more desperate of the pair, sat in the bottom three, five points off safety at kick off.
Hull were the better team in the first half but couldn’t make a breakthrough. That breakthrough did come early in the second half however, just not into the Luton net.
The Hatters launched a deep ball into Hull territory and following a few touches into the box, it cannoned off two City players to end up in the back of the net.
To make matters worse, Hull would go on to lose the game 1-0, now sitting just three points above the drop zone.
Scott Hogan’s Outrageous Volley
Down in League Two MK Dons played host to Fleetwood Town in the EFL this weekend, with the host looking to end their tumultuous campaign with a few wins. As has their season, all did not go to plan.
Danilo Orsi gave MK the lead in the first half, but Fleetwood would then go onto score four straight goals in the second half.
MK did manage to half the deficit at the death, as Scott Hogan pulled off some magic.
Following a ball over the top, Hogan channelled his inner Robin van Persie, followed the ball over his head and volleyed it past a helpless Jay Lynch.
The home team lost 4-2, but at least Hogan got a goal for the history books.
Gustavo Hamer Does it Again
Sticking to the theme of wonder goals, on Friday night it was the turn of Sheffield United’s Gustavo Hamer.
The Blades were facing off with in-form side Coventry City with both sides needing three points to match their play-off ambitions.
It was Hamer who opened the scoring in the only way he knows how. United got a freekick about ten yards outside of the box. Up steps Hamer and you know the rest, an absolute blinder into the top corner.
The Blades would go onto win the game 3-1. A result that now sees them top, with Yorkshire rivals Leeds United dropping points at home to Swansea City.
Terrier’s Striker Found in Trotters Away End
Huddersfield Town’s play-off charge has faltered in this half of the season. Results have seen Michael Duff sacked as manager and the team fallout of the top six.
On Saturday, the downward trend continued, as the Terriers lost 4-0 to promotion rivals Charlton Athletic. One notable absentee, was January transfer Dion Charles. Whilst the forward hasn’t had the best of times in Yorkshire, failing to score as of yet, it was though he would be at the game.
Instead, Northern Ireland international Charles, was in the away end as his former side, Bolton Wanderers, faced Blackpool. Whilst Wanderer’s fans loved to see in and amongst it, the reaction from Huddersfield fans, was as expected, frosty.
Route One at Morecambe
Right at the bottom of the EFL, Morecambe are having a torrid time of it. The Shrimpers sit 23rd, nine points off safety and several off-pitch ownership problems.
Despite what is going on, Derek Adams has managed to build a side that has stuck together and caused others a headache, as they look to stay in the EFL.
On Saturday they took on Swindon Town in a game where the elements truly took over.
With the wind and rain swirly, a long ball launched over the top was the way to go. Whilst defenders missed the ball, Lee Angol somehow managed to attach himself and slot home the goal that would be the winner, keeping his team well and truly alive in the race for safety.
There’s no way we will have included every obscure moment from this weekend’s EFL action, certainly not with just five picks. Let us know what we missed in the comments below.
