There’s something undeniably exciting and a little unpredictable when an EFL club takes a chance on a non-league striker. This January, Gillingham could be about to discover a genuine talent in AFC Fylde forward Danny Ormerod.

Danny Ormerod’s Form

The 19-year-old has taken the National League North by storm this season, scoring 16 goals and providing five assists in 22 league games, nearly averaging a goal contribution per match. A Mill Farm academy graduate, Ormerod has been at the heart of Fylde’s tight title race, helping the Coasters remain in contention with South Shields and Merthyr Town.

Every goal has mattered in their push for promotion, and Ormerod’s knack for finding the net has made him one of the most exciting young prospects outside the Football League.

It’s little wonder that his form has drawn attention from higher up the pyramid. Journalist Stephen Killen has reported that Gillingham are among the clubs keeping a close watch on the teenager this transfer window. For the League Two side, who currently sit in lower mid-table, the timing could hardly be better.

The Gills have struggled for goals this season. Their top striker, Josh Andrews, has managed just three league goals, while midfielder Bradley Dack leads the team with six. In this context, Ormerod represents more than just a promising signing he could be the spark to lift a struggling attack and add a new dimension to Gareth Ainsworth’s side.

Confidence and guidance could be key to his transition. Ormerod will arrive at Priestfield high on confidence after a stellar first half of the season, and Ainsworth’s proven track record in nurturing young talent makes him the ideal manager to help the striker adapt to EFL football. With the right guidance, the teenager could not only make an immediate impact but also develop into a long-term asset for the club.

Taking a punt on a non-league striker is always a gamble. Yet in Ormerod, Gillingham may have found a rare opportunity: a young, dynamic forward with a proven goalscoring pedigree, the confidence to step up, and the potential to become a key figure in the club’s future. If the deal goes through, the Gills could well be striking gold this winter.
