EFL League One side Huddersfield Town confirmed the signing of attacker Alfie May on Tuesday morning.
This follows an exclusive report by Football League World that the Terriers had agreed a £1.2m deal for the forward from Birmingham City.
The signing also follows the 32-year-old winning the League One title with Birmingham City in the 2024/25 campaign.
Now, it is most likely that the former Charlton Athletic man will play in a starting role. Therefore, here are a couple of things that both Huddersfield fans and EFL fans in general should expect from May.
A Clear Attacking Threat
In signing the 32-year-old, the Accu stadium outfit are gaining a player who possesses a clear attacking threat.
This judgement comes because he scored 16 goals in the EFL League One last season. His statistics also show he made 70 shots with 33 of these on target.
Furthermore, May had 133 touches in opposition boxes during the 2024-25 campaign. These attacking statistics show the threat that the 32-year-old holds and the constant presence that he shows when facing oppositions.
This could be especially useful during Lee Grant’s front foot and aggressive gameplay which he would bring with him from his time at Ipswich Town.
A Wealth of Experience
Through the Englishman’s career, we can see that the forward has a wealth of experience which you can see in his gameplay.
During his time in EFL League One, he was able to make 250 appearances which include his time at Birmingham City, Charlton Athletic, Cheltenham Town and Doncaster Rovers. Furthermore, May, within his time at Birmingham last season, played a crucial role in City winning the EFL League One title.
As well as this, May’s time at Cheltenham Town, where he was able to play a crucial role in Cheltenham winning EFL League Two in the 2020/21 season, add more valuable experience to his CV.
With these factors being considered, May arguably will be a great addition for the Terriers as they look to be promoted to the EFL Championship next season.
Can Alfie May Be Successful At Huddersfield?
This signing can be seen to have many positives and negatives. However, this can also lead to a number of judgements being expressed.
Therefore, the signing probes the question: can he be successful? Well, yes if the Terriers use him properly. Throughout the 2024/25 season, we saw the attacker in three different positions as a winger, attacking midfielder and a striker position.
But, with some Birmingham fans expressing how good May is when up front compared to in midfield, we can see that the Englishman is a good, even excellent signing if used in the correct position.
However, if he is not used effectively, the impact of the 32-year-old will be limited which will therefore be limiting the success he can bring to the team.
Only time will tell how Grant will use the attacker. But, it is pivotal that he makes the right choice if he is to get the best out of Alfie May next season.
