Amario Cozier-Duberry vs. Reyes Cleary: Who’s The Best Winger in League One?

Both Amario Cozier-Duberry and Reyes Cleary have set League One alight this season, but who is the best winger in the division?

Amario Cozier-Duberry

Amario Cozier-Duberry stole the show in the first months of the season, but Reyes Cleary’s performances has been after the crown; so it got us thinking, who is the best winger in League One?

Amario Cozier-Duberry has been the star of Bolton Wanderers season so far, with sublime finishes getting the Trotters points in countless games. The Brighton & Hove Albion has rightly shown he is too good for this level.

Reyes Cleary might not have the same amount of wonder goals as his winger counterpart but his one from the his own half at Bradford City might top the lot.

The former West Bromwich Albion youngster has not only shown his class in League One, but also against Premier League Champions, Liverpool.

With both players stature in mind, the Lower Tiers club correspondents of Bolton Wanderers and Barnsley give their case, for their clubs player.

Amario Cozier-Duberry – Bolton Wanderers

Amario Cozier-Duberry has been, without a shadow of a doubt, Bolton Wanderers best player this season. On countless occasions he has saved the team from losing games and helped them win games with some sublime goals.

The Brighton & Hove Albion loanee joined the club after a spell with Blackburn Rovers where he simply didn’t get to play enough. In around six months at BWFC, the 20-year-old has shown he is more than ready for the Championship.

In all competitions this season, the winger has netted seven times and got eight assists. That includes game winners over Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town and Peterborough United and also a game saving score against Leyton Orient.

All season, oppositions have know what the player will do, and for the most part, no one has been able to stop him. ACD averages 0.35 assists per 90 and 0.26 goals per 90. At the time of writing, the 20-year-old has the most assists in the division and only Aaron Connolly and Gideon Kodua have outscored him of players who play in the wing position.

Whilst Cozier-Duberry’s form has taken a dip at the same time of Bolton Wanderers’, he still remains a threat for other teams, making 0.82 successful crosses per 90 and 2.39 successful attacking dribbles per 90.

ACD has set the division alight for BWFC and will be key if they make the playoffs this season. The 20-year-old stats back up the way the winger plays and that is why he is a force too good for League One.

Reyes Cleary – Barnsley

Reyes Cleary joined the Reds from West Bromwich Albion.

Despite plaudits from Academy staff, he made only two senior appearances for WBA before spending time on loan at Walsall and Hartlepool United, scoring six goals in 20 matches during his Hartlepool spell.

Cleary had a slow beginnings to life at The Tykes, with his first start came in the EFL Cup, against Fleetwood Town. It wasn’t until Bradford – at The Valley Parade, his first League One start, until the unassuming starlet stole the show.

1-0 down early doors, Cleary picked up the ball, and shot. All in his own half, the ball found the wind, picked up and looked over Bradford ‘keeper Sam Walker.

Since then, the youngster has kept up his good form, scoring five this season, and assisting six in 17 games.

The English winger has racked up a current xG of 2.81, and scored five in 27 shots, proving that he is taking as many quality chances he can get. Putting him in and around the top 20% of attackers in the league.

In his 482 touches off the ball, nearly 80 of them are in the opposition penalty box, that’s just over 16% of ALL touches he has, in the ‘danger zone’.

When it comes to his passing game, the wide player sees 1.80 successful dribbles per 90, and 1.92 successful crosses (also per 90).

Cleary has set the league alight and sparked a conversation between himself, and the aforementioned Amario Cozier-Duberry.

Reyes Cleary also recently picked up Man Of The Match against Premier League side Liverpool in the FA Cup 4th round, and has picked up widespread praise from Liverpool fans and neutrals alike.

The club has also turned down four bids for the winger this window, according to owner Neerav Parekh at a Fans Forum this week

So Who Takes The Crown?

Ultimately, both wingers fit their respective systems.

Reyes Cleary can pick up the ball and run down the flank, cut inside and play balls in, all Barnsley lack is the striker to stick the ‘tap-in’ away – with Davis Keillor-Dunn preferring to pick up and weave with the ball himself.

Amario Cozier-Duberry is an X-factor. Not your traditional winger, despite the attributes he hold’s, the player specialises in the world beater and is a menace to anyone in front of him.

Statistically, Reyes has the edge on stats per 90′ and the overall shot accuracy, however that comes at the knowledge that the Barnsley man has played less games than ACD so far.

Both wingers have put up similar goal contribution numbers, showing they both prove their worth at the top end of the field.
