Ex-Bristol City midfielder Ayman Benarous is reportedly on trial with recently relegated Plymouth Argyle as the Englishman searches for his next club after departing Ashton Gate at the end of the season, reports Pete O’Rourke.
Benarous enjoyed a stay just over four years long at Bristol City, but departing on a free this summer means now that his services are available for nothing.
Someone with his experience could be a vital signing for Plymouth Argyle, who have already lost both Mustaphu Bundu and Micheal Baidoo this summer, with The Pilgrims now in need of an overhaul.
What Qualities Could Benarous Bring To Devon?
The 21-year-old midfielder still has plenty of potential to fulfil, but in recent times minutes with Bristol City have been hard to come by. Without an appearance since the 2021/2022 season, Benarous really needs some minutes to kick on, and Plymouth may well be a classy move.
It is likely that pace, power, skill and technical prowess will be provided from the former Bristol City man if he does eventually join Argyle.
Benarous needs football, and in an environment of Tom Cleverley and Devon, it could be a massive boost for the Englishman to really get away and get a fresh start to boost his development opportunities.
Would Ayman Benarous Be A Good Acquisition For Plymouth?
From what we’ve last seen of him, Benarous certainly can work some magic when out along the flanks, but because it’s been such a long time since he’s played at a Senior Level, this move feels like it may carry some risks if Plymouth follow through with a contract offer post-trial.
Firstly, the lack of recent match experience that Ayman Benarous possesses may mean that he takes a while to get up to scratch with the pace and quality of the professional game once again. Alongside that, it means that the 21-year-old may not have the sharpness other players could well have built up over pre-season if Plymouth don’t act quickly for Benarous’ signature.
However, despite the risk-taking, Tom Cleverley clearly has his sights set on a younger pedigree of talent and skill this season with Plymouth.
Only one of their six summer deals are over the age of 25, and it’s clear to see that Benarous clearly fits the recruitment schedule, and Cleverley could well be the right coach to give the English Wide Man a real chance to kick back on once again.
