Former Ipswich Town defender Barry Cotter has returned to the League of Ireland after signing for Derry City.
The 27‑year‑old right‑back left Barnsley by mutual consent, ending a spell that saw him make more than 63 appearances for the Tykes after joining from Shamrock Rovers in 2023.
He spent the first half of this season on loan at Notts County but did not feature after September.
Derry, who has taken four points from their opening three matches, moved quickly to bring Cotter home as they look to strengthen their defensive options for the year ahead.
Cotter arrives with a strong Irish pedigree, having previously represented both Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick’s Athletic, where he developed a reputation for his athleticism and attacking intent from full‑back.
Speaking after completing the move, Cotter said: “The standard of the league has improved again since I last played, and when I saw the squad that the gaffer has assembled, it looked very strong.”
He added, “I know I can help the team to challenge for trophies this season. I’m very much looking forward to getting started.”
His athleticism and attacking intent from right‑back should suit Tiernan Lynch’s style, giving Derry more drive on the flanks.
Cotter signed a three‑and‑a‑half‑year deal with Ipswich Town on 31 January 2018, joining from Limerick for an undisclosed fee.
Although initially part of the under‑23 squad, he made his first‑team debut on 10 April 2018 in a 1–0 win over Barnsley at Portman Road.
Moments later, Mick McCarthy stunned the media by announcing he was walking away from the club during a fiery, desk‑thumping press conference.
He made one further appearance that season, coming on as a late substitute in a 4–0 win at Reading on 28 April.
Cotter left Ipswich on 22 March 2021 after being told he would not be offered a new contract.
