Portsmouth have agreed a fee with MTK Budapest for highly rated Hungarian midfielder Márk Kosznovszky – but the deal is far from done, with Blackburn Rovers now preparing a late move to hijack the transfer, sources have told The Lower Tiers.
The 22-year-old playmaker has attracted increasing interest this summer after a strong campaign in the Hungarian top flight, where he featured 25 times for MTK, scoring three goals and making three assists. A dynamic central midfielder equally comfortable in holding or attacking roles, Kosznovszky is known for his exceptional work rate, sharp passing range, and tenacious style of play. Technically sound with a superb first touch and explosive pace, he has become one of Hungary’s brightest young talents.
The Márk Kosznovszky Saga Update
Portsmouth looked to have won the race for the former Parma prospect, with Csakfoci.hu reporting earlier today that a fee had been agreed between the Championship side and MTK Budapest. Football Insider have suggested Pompey had beaten a host of rivals to his signature.
However, that picture may be premature. We understand that while Portsmouth have struck a deal with MTK, personal terms with the player are yet to be finalised – and Blackburn Rovers are now circling, ready to lodge a late bid to lure Márk Kosznovszky to Ewood Park.
Blackburn’s interest significantly complicates matters for Portsmouth, who had hoped to wrap up the deal in the coming days. A club hoping to reach the Championship Play-Offs and a more immediate pathway to the first tier could prove tempting for the Hungarian youth international, who previously attracted interest from Sheffield United – although the Blades appear to have stepped back in recent days.
Márk Kosznovszky began his career in Hungary before making a surprise switch to Serie A side Parma in 2019. He made a solitary appearance for the Italian club, debuting in a 3–0 defeat to Sampdoria on 22 May 2021. That summer, he returned to Hungary to join MTK Budapest and gained further experience with loan spells at Tiszakécske and Kozármisleny in the second division.
As of now, Portsmouth remain in the driving seat – but with Blackburn preparing a formal approach, the deal is hanging in the balance. Whether the south coast side can get it over the line remains to be seen.
