According to Alan Nixon this morning, Bolton Wanderers are set to sign Irish international right-back Cyrus Christie following his departure from Swansea City after his short-term spell in Wales, where he made just 12 appearances, starting on just three occasions.
How Have Bolton Wanderers Started?
Schumacher’s Bolton Wanderers side haven’t gotten off to the start they would have anticipated, having drawn their last four League One fixtures 1-1, finding themselves in 14th place. They’ve brought in 11 players as of writing (Christie set to be the 12th) but are yet to add any additional cover at right-back following Jordi Osei Tutu’s injury, that has kept him out of action for the last couple of games, where Josh Dacres-Cogley has started without a suitable alternative on the bench.
Likely to be either a one season or six-month deal on a free transfer, Christie found game time hard to come by at Swansea last year, after he joined in November following a lengthy period out of action as a free agent, featuring on just 12 occasions, often spending his matchdays as a benchwarmer, but prior to this, Christie was one of the Championship’s most consistent right-backs.
Christie broke through the ranks at Coventry City, off the back of a handful of loan spells at Midlands based non-league sides, making 118 appearances for The Sky Blues, before departing for Derby County where he spent three years as a consistent starter at The Rams. Shorter spells at Middlesborough, Fulham (including a short stint in the Premier League) and Nottingham Forest followed, but he never settled at any of these clubs, running down his Fulham contract, ultimately ending up at Hull for a two-year stint, leading up to his uninspiring Swansea career.
He additionally had a solid international career for The Republic of Ireland, featuring in 30 different international fixtures, although never got the call up for any major international tournaments.
Bolton will be looking for any improvements for their squad depth today, as they are on the hunt to finally return to the Championship after 7 years away from the second tier.
