Boos Ring Out At Birmingham City

Birmingham City made it three straight defeats as they lost 1-0 against Charlton Athletic on Saturday, as boos were aimed at manager Chris Davies.

The Blues are currently 12th in the Championship table, eight points from the play-off spots.

But with clear discontent from the fans, it raises a question – are the fanbase demanding too much from a newly promoted side, or should they really be doing better?

Tom Wagner’s Knighthead group have invested heavily on their squad this season, spending over £28 million on players, according to Transfermarkt.

The summer signings of Kyogo Furuhashi, Marvin Ducksch and the returning Demarai Gray were seen as a statement of intent by Championship fans.

Big moves for Carlos Vicente and August Priske in January for a total fee of roughly £13 million had Birmingham fans believing that they could have a strong end to the season.

And alongside the club’s record League One points tally in their promotion last year, many Championship supporters began the season believing that the Blues would challenge for the play-offs.

The Reality

All in all, the Blues have been a solid mid-table club throughout the season, although an unbeaten run stretching from early January to mid-February gave fans hope for something more.

However, following their third straight defeat on Saturday, manager Chris Davies came under fire from supporters, with boos directed at him, particularly from the younger section of their travelling fans in Charlton.

Speaking on fan channel BCFC Royal Blue, Matt O’Neill said: “The players don’t seem to talk to each other – it’s like they’re not on the same training pitch five days a week! It just makes us a blunt instrument.”

Gary O’Neill added: “You have to come back to the manager – you can’t gloss over this. It really questions Chris Davies, because this is a really important last few games of the season for him.

“He hasn’t started well. The ownership is gonna be looking at this, and I don’t know whether that’s gonna be good enough for Knighthead.”

Safe But Uncertain For Birmingham City

With the Blues sat mid-table with ten games to go, it now looks highly likely that they will spend a second straight year in the Championship.

However, in recent times, the likes of Ipswich and Sunderland have been involved in promotion battles the year after coming up to the Championship, with Wrexham now looking in good stead to follow suit.

The Blues have been a force to be reckoned with at St Andrew’s, losing just two of their 17 games at home this year.

However, their away form has let them down, with the club averaging less than a point per game on their travels.

With Birmingham’s fate for next year all but decided, there will be an expectation from all involved at the club to achieve or, at the very least, least be involved in the fight for promotion next season.

All that is left to be decided is whether Chris Davies is the right man to lead them there – their final ten matches will be crucial for the 40-year-old to stay in his post.
