When Bradford City’s last-gasp promotion to EFL League One occurred on the 3rd of May, everyone’s eyes turned towards the contest between Bradford City and Huddersfield Town, with it being the first West Yorkshire Derby in the League after 18 years.
So we are going to roll back the years and look at three players that have played for both sides before Bradford host Huddersfield at home this Saturday.
Players To Have Played For Both Bradford City And Huddersfield Town
Nahki Wells
The first player on our list is in the form of current Luton Town striker Nahki Wells. So far this season, he has only managed to pick up one assist in four appearances.
However, the 35-year-old has delivered success to both West Yorkshire sides throughout his career so far, with the Bermuda International. Firstly, starting at the Bantams in 2011 in League Two, he was able to net 26 goals in 54 appearances, which contributed to the Valley Parade outfit being promoted to EFL League One.
Then, in January in the 2013/14 season, he left the Bantams to join rivals Huddersfield Town in the Championship after scoring 15 goals in 21 appearances for Bradford at the start of the season. Within his 153 appearances for Huddersfield, he managed to score 49 goals.
As well as this, in the 2016/17 season, he was a part of the Huddersfield side that gained promotion to the Premier League through the playoffs.
Lewis O’Brien
The second player on our list to play for Bradford City and Huddersfield Town is 26-year-old Lewis O’Brien, who is currently playing in the Championship for newly promoted side Wrexham. He has contributed to two goals so far this season in 6 appearances.
The Englishman started his career in Huddersfield’s academy, with him being a part of it from 2009 to 2018, and then, when he graduated from the academy, Huddersfield decided to loan the midfielder to rivals Bradford City at the start of the 2018/19 season.
Where he managed to make 46 appearances and net 4 goals in a disappointing season with the Bantams, being relegated to EFL League Two.
After this loan spell, you could argue that he was a crucial part of the Terriers as he made 131 appearances and picking up 8 goals, which earned the current Wrexham player a move to Premier League side Nottingham Forest.
John Stead
Our third player, that has played for Bradford City and Huddersfield Town, is Jonathan Stead, who most recently had a spell at Harrogate Town in the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons and is now assistant coach at Bristol Rovers.
The coach made 77 appearances for the Terriers across two spells, with him being a part of the youth team as well. You could argue that the striker had an underwhelming time at Town.
The 42 year old carried out two loan spells at Bradford City from Huddersfield Town. In the first spell at the Bantams in the 2013/14 season, Stead was only able to make 8 appearances and score one goal. However, in the second spell in the 2014/15 season, he made 14 appearances, picking up four goals and three assists. One of these goals had high importance with the former Notts County man starting the comeback away against Chelsea, which the Bantams went on to win 4-2.
Trevor Cherry
Our penultimate player, that has played for Bradford City and Huddersfield Town, comes in the form of Trevor Cherry.
Cherry was born in Huddersfield and therefore, he came through Town’s academy set up. In the year 1965, the former Leeds United man graduated into the Terriers’ first team, where he made 156 appearances and scored 11 goals before moving to Leeds in 1972.
After this, he joined the Bantams in 1982, where he made 92 appearances and did not pick up a single goal. Then, he went on to have a short spell as manager at the Bantams.
Danny Cadamarteri
Our final player that has played for Bradford City and Huddersfield Town is Danny Cadamarteri.
The forward had two spells at Bradford City, with him making overall 91 appearances across both spells and netting seven goals.
Likewise, at Huddersfield Town, the 45-year-old carried out two spells with him, making a total of 70 appearances and scoring 8 goals in his time there.
