Nigel Clough’s FA Cup Record Against Premier League Opposition

As Mansfield Town prepare to face Arsenal in this weekend’s FA Cup fifth round, Brewers fans attention inevitably turns to Nigel Clough’s previous encounters with Premier League opposition during his time at Burton Albion.

Clough built a reputation at the Pirelli Stadium for organising disciplined, competitive sides capable of rising to the occasion against elite teams, something Mansfield supporters will hope to see replicated against top-flight opposition.

The 2018/19 Carabao Cup Run

After wins against Shrewsbury and fellow Championship competitors, Aston Villa, The Brewers first top-flight opponent of the competition came in a third round against Sean Dyche’s Burnley.

Although the Clarets had most of the ball and led at halftime, Clough’s side remained competitive, and their resilience paid off as Liam Boyce and Jamie Allen scored in the last half an hour to clinch a tight but well-earned victory.

Another two close wins against Championship opposition Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough saw Clough’s Albion progress to their first ever Carabao Cup semi-final, where they faced Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The first leg at the Etihad Stadium ended in a heavy 9-0 defeat, reflecting the gap in squad depth and quality.

However, Burton restored pride in the second leg at the Pirelli Stadium, competing admirably in a 1-0 defeat, earning praise for their application, dedication and organisation.

Despite the 10-0 aggregate loss, reaching the semi-finals marked an extraordinary achievement for a club of such small stature.

The Night Burton Faced Manchester United

One of the most memorable fixtures of Clough’s Burton tenure came in January 2006, while Albion when non-league Albion hosted Manchester United in the FA Cup third round.

At the time, Burton were a Conference National side, while Manchester United, managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, arrived at the Pirelli as overwhelming favourites.

Yet Clough’s side delivered a performance that stunned the footballing world.

Burton earned a 0-0 draw against the then eight times Premier League champions, forcing a replay and a trip to the iconic Old Trafford.

The Brewers defended resolutely, maintained compact shape, and carried genuine threat on the break.

Goalkeeper Saul Deeney produced a standout display, while Albion’s organisation frustrated a United side featuring established internationals and young future stars.

The replay at Old Trafford ended in a 5-0 defeat, but the original stalemate remains one of the greatest results in the club’s history, and a defining moment in Clough’s managerial career.

The tie encapsulates Clough’s ability to prepare underdog sides for major occasions.

What It Means Ahead Of Mansfield vs Arsenal

As Mansfield prepare to face Arsenal, Clough’s previous record against Premier League opposition offers plenty of encouragement. His history at Burton Albion shows he understands how to:

  • Organise teams effectively.
  • Minimise the gap in quality through tactical discipline.
  • Use cup fixtures as platforms for belief and momentum.

While Arsenal will enter the fixture as clear favourites, Clough’s track record suggests Mansfield will be structured, hard-working, and tactically prepared.

Nigel Clough’s record against Premier League opponents during his Burton Albion tenure highlights a manager comfortable in his underdog role, and capable of ensuring his side compete with pride and organisation on the biggest stages.

  1. Should check facts first…. Burton were in league one in their 18/19 season, so it’s not “fellow championship competitors”

    • Not what the writer meant, he meant Forest and Boro were in the Championship. Have edited the keeper bit, thank you for letting us know!
