Burton Albion fell to the hands of the FA this week, as they were hit with a hefty fine after an altercation with Plymouth Argyle.

On the 4th January 2026, Burton Albion took on Plymouth Argyle at Home Park, which saw the hosts win 3-0. After an 8 hour, and 474 mile round trip, the heavy defeat was not the only outcome.
The Brewers today pleaded guilty to the FA’s charge of ‘failing to control their players’ during the match.
The charges come after masses of players surrounded the match officials in the 75th minute. With the Brewers already 3-0 down, it was no surprise to see the tensions topple. Especially after Burton Albion’s Lofthouse fouled Galloway to concede a very soft penalty.
In the postmatch press conference, Burton boss Gary Bowyer went on to call the decision, a “debatable penalty”. This was clearly reciprocated by the players after the incident.
The charges were announced soon after, with the club having until 12th January to respond. The club did not do so, and today have been hit with a £12,500 fine!
On the day, the full time whistle saw Plymouth climb above Burton Albion in the League One table. This meant that The Brewers slipped into the relegation spots momentarily.
Despite this, they currently sit 19th on 30 points, just 6 points above the relegation zone. Since the altercation, Burton have also progressed to the 4th round of the FA Cup, which we covered here. All is not seemingly bad down at the Pirelli Stadium, but the fine could dampen an already weak budget.

Although, The Brewers have had a slip in form, and are still actively fighting for survival. Survival would be massive for the club as it would allow them more financial stability. Especially in the hopes of permanent EFL appearances.
With games against Lincoln, Bolton, and Huddersfield, the next few weeks are imperative for the side. Any points would massively boost survival hopes.
