Burton Albion’s Five Most Notable Loan Signings

Burton Albion have built a reputation over the years as an ideal club for developing young talent through the loan system.

From Premier League prospects gaining valuable first-team minutes to experienced professionals providing short-term quality, temporary signings have often played key roles in the Brewers’ success.

Several players who spent time at the Pirelli Stadium have gone on to enjoy impressive careers at the top levels of the game or spent many years there before spending time at Burton Albion.

Here’s a look at some of the most notable Burton Albion loan players, their time with the Brewers, and where their careers have taken them since.

Jordan Pickford

The most notable player on the list is current England No.1 Jordan Pickford.

Before becoming England’s first choice goalkeeper, Pickford spent the first half of the season on loan at Burton Albion in the 2013 on loan from Sunderland.

At just 19 years old, Pickford made 15 appearances during his spell with the Brewers, making four clean sheets in the process.

In his time at the Pirelli, the England stopper showcased the shot-stopping ability that would later make him one of England’s most important players.

Pickford is now a Premier League stalwart with Everton since his £28.5 move from Sunderland in 2017. He has since made 498 appearances in the top-flight of English football, with an impressive 97 clean sheets in that time.

However, the Everton star has arguably had his biggest impact whilst playing for England.

Since making his debut England debut in 2017, Pickford has earned 71 international caps, playing in two European Championship finals, and a World Cup semi-final in 2018. 

Now at the age of 32, Pickford is still playing at the highest level of the game, for both club and country, highlighting his meteoric rise since his time at Burton Albion.

Hamza Choudhury

Another former Albion loanee who went on to have an impressive Premier League career is Hamza Choudhury.

The midfielder joined Burton Albion from Leicester City during the 2015/16 season.

His energetic style and ball-winning ability helped strengthen the Brewers midfield during an important campaign which saw Burton gain back-to-back promotions after a second place in the League One table.

The Bangladeshi internation rejoined Albion the following season for their first ever season in the Championship after impressing during his first spell at the club.

Choudhury made 28 appearances during his two years at the club, an impressive feat as an 18-year-old inexperienced player.

Choudhury has since become a regular squad player for Leicester City, making 157 appearances for the club across all competitions, with 57 of those coming in the Premier League.

In 2025, the midfielder chose to represent his native Bangladesh at international level, and has since made seven appearances for his nation, becoming an iconic figure for the country.

Matej Kovàř

Goalkeeper Matej Kovàř arrived at Burton Albion on loan from English giants Manchester United in 2021/22.

Although the Czech only made six appearances during his time at the Pielli, he was able to keep an impressive four clean sheets.

Without any first team appearances in the first team under Eric Tan Haag, Kovàř was sold to Bayer Leverkusen, where the young keeper made 17 appearances under Xabi Alonso during the German sides impressive 2023/24 season, which saw them win the league undefeated.

Kovàř played an instrumental role in his sides Europa League run that same season, which saw his side reach the final.

Unfortunately, his side lost the final 3-0 to Atalanta, but his impressive performances across 12 appearances in the cup highlight the keeper’s potential ability to play at the top level.

The young Czech has been on loan to Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, securing the No.1 spot this season, making 37 starts so across all competitions, including eight in the Champions League.

Darren Bent

One of the most high-profile names to appear at Burton Albion was former England international Darren Bent, who joined on loan from local side Derby County in the 2017/18 season.

Bent’s experience and goal-scoring pedigree added quality to the Brewers’ attack during a difficult second consecutive season in the Championship. The seasoned forward only managed two goals in his 15 games for the club, in a campaign which ultimately saw Albion relegated.

His time at the Pirelli however doesn’t tarnish the England forwards stellar career, which saw the Bent make 277 appearances in the Premier League, where he scored 106 goals.

His best season came in the 2009/10 league campaign, in which Bent scored an impressive 24 league goals for Sunderland, winning player of the season in his first year at the club.

Bent would go on to announce his retirement at the end of his time with Burton Albion. Since the end of his professional career, Bent has gone on to work in football media as a pundit and radio presenter, most notably for the controversial TalkSport.

Michael Kightly

Another experienced loanee to join Burton Albion was Michael Kightly, who signed for Burton Albion on loan from Burnley in the 2016/17 season.

Kightly brought much needed Premier League experience and creativity to Burton’s attacking line during their first season in the Championship.

Although injury issues hampered his time at the Pirelli, Kightly made 12 appearances throughout the season, scoring four goals. 

The majority of Kightly’s career was played in the Championship, where he scored 32 goals in 161 appearances in the second division.

However, Kightly played 75 games in the Premier League, scoring seven goals across his three top-flight clubs, Wolves, Stoke City, and Burnley.

Following his retirement, Kightly has moved into an array of roles in football.

He has made appearances for Sky Sports in analysis and punditry, while also representing Wolves in an ambassador’s role, specifically attending Premier League Mornings Live in the US in 2025.
