Burton Albion have acquired the services of EFL Journeyman Andy Cannon for the rest of the season. The Staffordshire club announced on X:

Burton’s decision to bring Cannon in is rooted in both opportunity and necessity. With the midfielder working his way back from a cruciate ligament injury suffered in August 2025. Wrexham needed a club willing to give him meaningful minutes once he’s fit again.

Burton fit that profile perfectly. The Brewers are short on experienced central options; they value his work rate and tactical discipline. Albion can offer a clearer pathway to regular football than he would get immediately at Wrexham.

For the Brewers, it’s a low‑risk move that adds proven EFL know‑how at a time when they need stability in midfield.

On the loan move, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson told the club:

“We wish Andy all the best. He’s worked really hard to get himself fit, and this opportunity gives him the chance to get back to playing first-team football.”

Can Cannon Fire Burton out a Relegation Scrap?

Andy Cannon gives Burton exactly what they’ve been missing. He’s a high‑volume, high‑intensity midfielder who can keep the ball moving and win it back in equal measure. At League One/League Two level, his underlying numbers have consistently been strong.

Cannon averages 7+ defensive duels per 90, wins over 55 percent of them, and posts around 5 progressive passes per 90, putting him in the upper bracket for midfielders at this tier.

His ball‑retention is another asset, typically operating at 85–88 percent passing accuracy, even when receiving under pressure, which suits a Burton side that often struggles to build through midfield.

Cannon’s career path explains why he fits so naturally into a graft‑heavy, tactically disciplined side. He came through at Rochdale, earned a move to Portsmouth, and later became a key figure at Hull City.

His work rate and tactical intelligence were valued even when he wasn’t a headline player.

His switch to Wrexham saw him evolve again – first as a deeper midfielder, then as a more advanced connector, producing his standout 2023/2024 season with 8 goals and 6 assists.

That versatility means Burton can use him as a ball‑winner, a link player, or a shuttling eight depending on the game state.
