Cameron Antwi and his form this season has not gone unnoticed, with several League One and League Two clubs tracking the Newport County midfielder ahead of a pivotal summer.

The 24-year-old is approaching the final months of his contract and, on the back of the most productive campaign of his career, he is quickly becoming one of the EFL’s most intriguing free-agent prospects. Antwi has already found the net five times in 28 appearances this season — comfortably his best return to date — while establishing himself as a key figure in Newport’s engine room.

Who Is Cameron Antwi?

Primarily operating as a central midfielder, Antwi’s versatility has added to his appeal. He is equally comfortable dropping deeper into a holding role when required, offering tactical flexibility that clubs higher up the pyramid value highly.

Antwi’s journey to this point has been anything but straightforward. He joined Blackpool in 2019 after progressing through Fulham’s academy and signed his first professional contract a year later. However, loan spells at AFC Telford United and Southport failed to provide the breakthrough he was seeking, and Blackpool released him in 2022.

That summer proved a turning point. Cardiff City moved quickly to secure his signature on a two-year deal after identifying his underlying potential. While a serious knee injury curtailed his opportunities in south Wales, the Bluebirds showed faith by offering him fresh terms at the conclusion of the 2023–24 season.

With first-team chances at Cardiff limited, Antwi made the bold decision to join Newport County on a permanent basis, prioritising minutes and momentum over comfort. It is a choice that now looks inspired.

Early Career Frustrations

His early career frustrations — three formative but unfulfilled years in the north-west and a Cardiff spell that promised much before stalling — have shaped a more resilient player. Antwi has spoken candidly about those experiences, acknowledging the lessons learned along the way and the gratitude he feels toward the clubs that helped keep his career moving forward.

“I’ve learnt things everywhere I have been. I’ll be grateful to Cardiff because without them I might not have had the chance to now be establishing myself at Newport.”

Newport, meanwhile, find themselves locked in a fierce battle to retain their League Two status. The recent departure of manager David Hughes and the appointment of former Austria captain and Premier League and FA Cup winner Christian Fuchs has added further intrigue to the County story.

For Antwi, the mission is clear. Despite growing interest elsewhere, his focus remains firmly on dragging Newport to safety.

“I want to give Newport everything because of the platform they gave me to finally develop, other clubs didn’t do that.

“It’s personal with me and I want to assure all our supporters, as a squad we really care. We take it home with ourselves and we are going to remedy any problems we have by giving maximum every day.”
