EXCLUSIVE: Stevenage Join Race for Newport’s Cameron Antwi

Stevenage have become the latest club to express a strong interest in Newport County midfielder Cameron Antwi, The Lower Tiers understands.

A source close to the 23-year-old has revealed that Antwi has just one year left on his contract at Rodney Parade, with several clubs across the EFL monitoring his status. Stevenage’s interest adds further weight to growing speculation around the player’s future, following our May report linking both Port Vale and Huddersfield Town to the dynamic midfielder.

The versatile central player enjoyed a breakout season in League Two last year and has since caught the eye with his performances — both in league play and more recently in the League Cup.

With his contract winding down, Newport face a decision: risk losing him for free next summer or consider offers in the current window, especially as clubs continue to circle.

Cameron Antwi: From Uncertain Prospect to Midfield Mainstay

While Cameron Antwi is best known for operating in the heart of midfield, the 23-year-old has also proven effective in a deeper, more defensive role when needed — showcasing tactical awareness and flexibility.

Antwi’s journey began at Fulham’s academy, but it was his 2019 move to Blackpool that first thrust him into the senior game. He signed professional terms a year later, yet struggled to make an impact during underwhelming loan spells at AFC Telford and Southport.

After being released by Blackpool in 2022, Antwi earned a lifeline with a two-year deal at Cardiff City. Despite suffering a major knee injury that disrupted his development, Cardiff saw enough promise to extend terms at the end of the 2023–24 campaign.

However, with first-team opportunities at the Welsh capital looking limited, Cameron Antwi opted for a fresh start at Newport County, where regular game time was a real possibility.

That decision proved pivotal.

Following injuries to key midfielders Aaron Wildig, Kieron Evans, and Kai Whitmore — as well as the departure of Bryn Morris — Cameron Antwi seized his opportunity and became a regular fixture in the side.

He also had to mend his relationship with then-manager Nelson Jardim, who candidly remarked on the midfielder’s early struggles with consistency and professionalism.

“Cameron’s talent was never in doubt,” Jardim said. “But there were times he didn’t bring the right energy or commitment during training and games.

“That said, I have to give credit where it’s due. Antwi has changed — his attitude, his work ethic, everything. He’s showing maturity, turning up early, training properly, and improving every week. That’s a testament to him and to everyone who supported his progress here.”

Bicycle Kick Brilliance: Antwi’s Moment of Magic Against Barnet

Cameron Antwi’s growing stock was given another boost on Tuesday night with a moment of sheer brilliance in Newport County’s League Cup preliminary round clash against Barnet.

With the game goalless, Antwi produced a jaw-dropping bicycle kick that stunned the crowd and left Barnet keeper Joe Wright rooted to the spot. The audacious strike rocketed into the back of the net before anyone could react.

It was the type of goal that scouts dream of witnessing — an emphatic, technically perfect effort that underlines just how far the midfielder has come. His performance will no doubt heighten the interest from clubs looking to bolster their engine room.

The match itself ended 2-2, with Newport eventually progressing on penalties. And while Antwi’s goal stole many of the headlines, Cardiff loanee Michael Reindorf added his own highlight with a sensational long-range strike following a mesmerising solo run.

Reindorf’s impact left jaws on the floor and instantly marked him out as a player to watch. With confidence soaring, the forward will be eager to build on this momentum as he pushes for more minutes and continues to showcase his exciting potential.

As for Cameron Antwi, the spotlight is firmly on him — and with Stevenage now officially in the mix, expect more developments in the coming weeks.
