Cardiff City have completed the loan signing of Liverpool full-back Calum Scanlon for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

They have bolstered their squad as they continue their push for automatic promotion from League One.

The 20-year-old left-back joins League One leaders Cardiff City from Premier League side Liverpool on a temporary deal.

Scanlon’s arrival comes after his recovery from a serious hamstring injury.

Who is Calum Scanlon?

Calum Alexander Scanlon is an England youth international who joined Liverpool’s academy from Birmingham City at the age of 15.

He made his senior debut for Liverpool in a UEFA Europa League win over Toulouse at Anfield in October 2023 and has represented England at various youth levels, from U17 through to U20.

Scanlon spent part of last season on loan at Millwall.

His progress was curtailed by injury, but he has since returned to full fitness and impressed with his performances at under-21 level.

Why this matters for Cardiff

Cardiff’s signing of Scanlon is more than just adding depth.

This reflects a calculated strategy from manager Brian Barry-Murphy to ensure competition.

Joel Bagan will play with less of a burden, with reassurance of cover and some left-back competition.

Scanlon fits the system, and is a player admired by the Liverpool hierarchy. He’s a player with premier-level training and technical versatility.

Injuries and fixture congestion are always a risk this late in the seaso.

Having another capable left-back is a smart piece of business from the Bluebirds.

How Scanlon fits into promotion plans

Cardiff are currently leading League One and pushing for an immediate return to the Championship. Adding Scanlon enhances Barry-Murphy’s squad depth — especially down the left flank — at a crucial stage. His inclusion should help maintain intensity across the final weeks of the season.

If Scanlon can stay fit and adapt quickly, he could become an important part of Cardiff’s tactical setup as they chase points and prepare for the decisive run-in.
