Cardiff City are one of a number of English Football League clubs interested in signing former Norwich City defender Jonathan Tomkinson this summer.
Tomkinson is currently a free agent after departing Norwich at the end of last season, following the expiration of his contract.
The 23-year-old has attracted interest from a number of clubs in the football league including League Two sides Notts County and Grimsby Town.
The Bluebirds are yet to make a signing this transfer window, with new manager Brian Barry-Murphy reportedly taking time to assess his current squad before turning to the market.
Barry-Murphy is expected to prioritize youth in his recruitment strategy, continuing the developmental approach he championed at both Manchester City’s academy and Rochdale.
Who is Jonathan Tomkinson?
Standing at 6’4″, Tomkinson brings a strong physical presence and a growing reputation for his composure on the ball. A product of the FC Dallas and Solar SC academies in Texas, he moved to Norwich City’s youth setup in 2019.
Although the American saw limited game time at Carrow Road, he gained valuable experience through multiple loan spells, including stints at Stevenage, Bradford City, and most recently, Ross County in the Scottish Premiership.
Tomkinson made 10 appearances for the Scottish side during the latter part of the 2024–25 season, playing a key role in helping the club avoid relegation while showcasing his aerial dominance and composure in playing out from the back.
The towering defender also brings international experience, having represented the United States at U17 level before earning seven caps with the U23 national team.
A move to South Wales could come at the perfect time for Tomkinson, with Cardiff’s rebuilding phase potentially offering him the regular game time that eluded him earlier in his career.
