Cardiff City’s transfer embargo is lifted, clearing the way for the Bluebirds to sign their first player of the January transfer window.

Cardiff City’s transfer embargo has been lifted, allowing the Bluebirds to complete the signing of Everton goalkeeper Harry Tyrer, via the official Cardiff website.
The club had been operating under an EFL-imposed embargo after failing to submit their accounts by the required deadline.
This restriction temporarily prevented Cardiff from registering new players, despite ongoing recruitment work behind the scenes.
The necessary paperwork has now been submitted and approved, with the English Football League granting clearance on Friday afternoon.
Harry Tyrer, 24, has already undergone a medical at Cardiff earlier this week. While the move had been agreed in principle earlier in the week, it could not be finalised until the embargo was lifted.
As revealed exclusively by WalesOnline, Harry Tyrer has been a priority target for head coach Brian Barry-Murphy, who has been eager to strengthen Cardiff’s goalkeeping options after the squad was left thin between the posts.
Tyrer’s arrival is seen as a key piece in providing depth and competition for places at a position that has been stretched due to recent departures and loan moves.
Cardiff currently have Nathan Trott and Matt Turner as their senior goalkeepers. Jak Alnwick left the club to join Huddersfield Town, while Ethan Horvath is expected to depart later this month.
Meanwhile, academy prospects Jake Dennis and Ewen Griffiths are set to head out on loan, leaving the squad light in goalkeeping numbers.
Barry-Murphy has consistently stressed the importance of having at least three goalkeepers available to cope with the club’s recruitment restrictions and fixture demands.
Manager’s Perspective
Speaking earlier this week, Barry-Murphy played down concerns over the embargo itself, insisting it had little impact on his day-to-day focus.
“My first notice of it was on Saturday morning,” he said. “It takes up no time in my mind. It will be sorted whenever it’s sorted.”
The manager’s focus has remained on building a competitive squad capable of navigating a challenging period in the campaign, with the January transfer window providing a key opportunity to address gaps.
Tyrer, who has spent time on loan away from Everton in recent seasons, is expected to provide both competition and cover for Trott and Turner, while bringing experience from his time with a Premier League club’s academy system.
The lifting of the embargo also allows Cardiff to continue other transfer plans they had been pursuing quietly behind the scenes.
It marks an important step for the club, giving Barry-Murphy the flexibility to strengthen his squad and maintain stability heading into a crucial period of the Championship season.
With Tyrer’s signing now imminent, Cardiff fans will hope the new recruit can help the club solidify its goalkeeping department and support a push up the table in the coming months.
