Lower Tiers Best 5: Championship Gameweek Four

The Championship delivered scenes of joy and happiness in its games last weekend in a game-week that saw Stoke City finish on top of the division. Now, following a busy mid-week of Carabao Cup fixtures, the focus turns towards this weekend.

Ahead of the Championship’s games this weekend, five of our writers have picked a game each to predict.

Let’s see what they have predicted.

Amar’s Prediction

This is simply a must win game for the home team. They’ve been one of the worst teams in the League so far and have to play well here.

The Head Coach told the fans to expect a great result and anything else will surely make the atmosphere at Loftus Road toxic. Charlton have gotten off to a decent start, but former Rs man Charlie Kelman has failed to pull up any trees thus far. In typical fashion I believe he’ll get off the mark this weekend.

There hasn’t been a 0-0 draw between this two sides since 1999, and this one is poised to be a cracker. Expect Kone to start and score for Rangers, it’s what he does.

Amar’s Prediction: QPR 3-1 Charlton Athletic

Dylan’s Prediction

Leicester City welcome Birmingham City to the King Power stadium in this weekend’s standout tie, with it being the selected 8pm Friday night kick-off to be shown live on Sky Sports.

Both sides come into the season having started decently well, Leicester sitting 7th and Birmingham City sitting 5th as it stands. The Foxes come into this match on the back of a 1-0 win away at Charlton Athletic, with Abdul Fatawu scoring the only goal on the day. On the other hand, Birmingham come into the match on the back of a shock defeat against Port Vale in the Carabao Cup, albeit having put out a weaker lineup.

Both teams possess massive quality, and I could sit here listing players all day. I won’t do that however. Leicester have the superior record in recent times, as they haven’t lost to the American-owned club since October 2011 – nearly 14 years ago.

I doubt that the record will play a part, as plenty has changed since the last meeting between the sides in the 2023/24 season. It’ll be a tight match, and I can’t split the sides.

Dylan’s Prediction: Leicester City 1-1 Birmingham City

Hannah’s Prediction

Millwall enter this clash at The Den with a steadier footing, having picked up two wins from their opening three Championship fixtures, including a gritty 1–0 away win at Sheffield United.

Wrexham, meanwhile, are still chasing their first league victory, sitting 19th after a chaotic but entertaining start that’s seen them score five and concede seven.

Despite their attacking flair, Phil Parkinson’s side remains defensively vulnerable, and Millwall’s compact shape and home advantage should tilt the balance.

Expect a high-tempo match with chances at both ends, but Millwall’s discipline and edge in midfield could see them edge it 2–1.

Hannah’s Prediction: Millwall 2-1 Wrexham

Jenson’s Prediction

Saturday sees Ipswich return to home soil for GW4, taking on a Derby side who also haven’t had the best of starts so far across the board this season.

Both teams will want three points to really fire up the engines at this stage with August almost over, and two sides with plenty of quality will definetly provide a good watch.

However, I think with Ipswich full of quality and the arrivals of Nunez and Furlong, they’ll just about edge The Rams, who have acquired former ITFC man Lewis Travis.

I think Ipswich will get the three points they need over the line ahead of the home crowd!

Jenson’s Prediction: Ipswich Town 3-2 Derby County

Lawson’s Prediction

Top of the table Stoke City host West Bromwich Albion in their final home game before the September international break.

The hosts have made a remarkable start to the campaign, taking maximum points from their opening three league fixtures. However, the Potters were dumped out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night after a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bradford.

Meanwhile, West Brom sit fourth in the league and remain unbeaten with two wins and a draw. The Baggies will be frustrated at the points dropped against Portsmouth after some questionable refereeing decisions.

The visitors could also be without trio captain Darnell Furlong, Tom Fellows and Caleb Taylor as all look set to depart before deadline day.

I’d expect the game to be a tight affair but can see the home side running out narrow winners.

Lawson’s Prediction: Stoke 3-2 West Bromwich Albion
