Charlton Athletic Defender Recalled Following Hibs Loan Spell

Championship side Charlton Athletic have recalled a young centre-back from his loan at Hibernian, seeking more regular game time.

Seeking more regular game time, Championship side Charlton Athletic have recalled centre-back Zach Mitchell from his loan at Scottish Premiership club Hibernian.

The 21-year-old defender impressed in the Premiership last season with St Johnstone, earning praise for his composure on the ball and defensive awareness.

He had joined Hibs on a season-long loan during the summer transfer window, but opportunities at Easter Road were limited, with Mitchell featuring just twice under head coach David Gray.

Gray Praises Professionalism

Head coach David Gray acknowledged that the recall was the right decision for both the club and Mitchell.

“Zach is a young player who wants to play games, which we completely understand, so it makes sense for him to return to Charlton Athletic,” Gray said.

“He was a model professional during his time here, fantastic to work with, always keen to learn, and I wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”

Mitchell Reflects on Hibs Experience

Mitchell described his time at Hibernian as a valuable learning opportunity despite limited appearances. Speaking after his start against Dundee United last month, he said: “I’ve had to be patient but the staff have been brilliant, and the experience there has properly helped me through that game.

It’s difficult as a player. You always want to be playing and getting game time, but I’ve been learning in other ways, away from the pitch, on the training ground. The staff and other players have been brilliant with me, so I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

He added: “It’s a great club and a great set of lads. We’ll keep moving forward together, and I look forward to the next one.

“As a player, you need to be ready at any moment. It can be hard maybe to not build up the moment too much. That’s something you have to control in yourself. It’s important not to get too high in certain moments and obviously not too low as well.”

Career So Far

Mitchell’s career has included several productive loan spells designed to accelerate his development. During the 2023–24 season, he spent a campaign at St Johnstone, making 28 league and cup appearances, where he gained invaluable Premiership experience and earned recognition for his consistent performances.

He also played under Ben Garner and Matty Etherington during his time at Colchester United, featuring in the first two games of Danny Cowley’s reign as head coach before returning to Charlton.

A long-term contract signed with Charlton in October 2024 underlines the club’s belief in Mitchell’s potential. These experiences have helped him adapt to different systems, leagues, and managerial styles, preparing him for the next stage of his career.

Hibs Statement

Hibernian confirmed the recall and thanked Mitchell for his contribution. “We can confirm that Zach Mitchell has today been recalled by Charlton Athletic. Everyone at Hibs wishes Zach all the best for the future and thanks him for his contribution,” the club said.

Looking Ahead at Charlton

Charlton will now reintegrate Mitchell at The Valley, where he will hope to build on his previous performances and push for regular first-team football in the Championship.

With his professionalism, adaptability, and eagerness to play, Mitchell is well-placed to become a key figure for the Addicks as they look to strengthen their defensive options and maintain momentum in the second half of the season.
