Charlton vs West Bromwich Albion: Crucial game with Mason on thin ice

Charlton Athletic will host West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night, with the visiting boss under increasing pressure.

Ryan Mason has seen his side go from three wins in their first four league games to just two victories in their last nine. West Brom have slipped to 12th in the table – just one point above 17th.

The mounting pressure has grown from Mason and his team’s lack of attacking threat, scoring just 12 goals in 13 games so far this season and ranking in the bottom three for expected goals (xG) created.

Their issues were compounded by a goalless draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday — who sit on -5 points after going into administration -on Saturday, with fans expressing their frustration through boos at full-time.

Meanwhile, at The Valley, Charlton have made an impressive start to life back in the Championship and currently sit eighth, just a couple of points off the play-offs.

The hosts are on a four-game unbeaten run under boss Nathan Jones and have only been beaten once in all competitions at The Valley since the middle of December in 2024, winning 17 of the last 23 matches there.

Team News

Charlton boss Nathan Jones has confirmed that striker Matty Godden is edging closer to a return from injury. The 34-year-old last featured for the Addicks in their League One play-off final win over Leyton Orient.

However, Josh Edwards remains sidelined for the hosts.

Ryan Mason’s West Brom side is currently depleted due to injuries to Jed Wallace, Jayson Molumby, Toby Collyer, and George Campbell.

The return of defender Alfie Gilchrist from a minor ankle injury will provide the manager with a natural right-back option once again.

Predicted Lineups

Charlton:

Thomas Kaminski (GK), James Bree, Kayne Ramsay, Lloyd Jones, Macauly Gillesphey, Joe Rankin-Costello, Conor Coventry, Greg Docherty, Sonny Carey, Charlie Kelman, Tyreece Campbell

West Bromwich Albion:

Josh Griffiths (GK), Alfie Gilchrist, Nat Phillips, Chris Mepham, Callum Styles, Alex Mowatt, Ousmane Diakite, Isaac Price, Mikey Johnston, Samuel Iling-Junior, Josh Maja

Player To Watch

Charlton: Charlie Kelman

The 24-year-old scored his first goal for Charlton in their draw at home to Swansea City at the weekend.

The American was signed in the summer for £3 million after scoring 23 league goals while on loan at Leyton Orient last season — the side defeated in the play-off final by Charlton.

Now up and running in the red of Charlton, Kelman will be hoping to double his tally for the season against the Baggies.

West Brom: Alfie Gilchrist

The Baggies have been struggling for form of late, with no stand-out player currently leading the way for Mason’s side.

However, Alfie Gilchrist’s first start for the West Midlands outfit on Saturday was one positive in an otherwise dull affair.

The 21-year-old, signed from Chelsea in the summer, showed great defensive awareness while progressively carrying the ball on a number of occasions. He also displayed his powerful long throw for the first time in blue and white stripes, which could certainly become an effective weapon.
