Chesterfield boss Paul Cook is desperate for his side to get all three points in the huge clash with Walsall on Saturday.

The game pits eighth against sixth and the Spireites could go just a single point behind the Saddlers with a win.

Paul Cook’s side come into this off the back of a 1-0 win over fellow promotion hopefuls Salford City on Tuesday, a return to winning ways following the shock 2-1 defeat to Welsh strugglers Newport County.

That win concludes, hopefully, the Spireites blip in form. Cook’s side have had two defeats and three draws prior to the Salford victory. Dependant on Swindon Town’s result, Chesterfield could move into the playoffs in seventh.

Quotes

Speaking to the Derbyshire Times, Cook said: “We know how difficult it will be and we respect the game but we also know what a win will do for our season. We have got to win tomorrow, that is our message to our players, our fans, to everyone in Chesterfield. If we can win tomorrow night that league table will look the best it has looked all year. And we are getting stronger.”

Walsall won the reverse fixture 1-0 back in September.

The Spireites boss continued: “We will be trying to do different stuff from within what we are doing. Walsall have got the least possession in the division for a reason and they are structurally set as good as you get. They are an outstanding team who got to Wembley last year and have been in the top three in the majority of this season bar a week or two.”

“We, and our supporters, have got to have a strong mindset tomorrow, they can’t score on the break,” Cook added. “They can’t score like they did here in the play-offs early in the game because it will give us a mountain climb.”
