Are Colchester United’s Play-Off Hopes Still Alive?

After slipping to a 1-0 defeat at home to Salford, Colchester United sit in twelfth place in League Two – six points adrift from the play-offs in a battle that is being fought between seven teams.

Their last five results have seen them win two, lose two and draw one. This has led to questions over whether this season’s campaign has a late twist to it.

Has the defeat to Salford dented Colchester United’s play-off hopes?

The Season So Far

This season, Colchester United have experienced highs such as a 3-1 win away at Notts County, a 4-1 win at home to Barnet and an impressive 6-2 win over Chesterfield.

Results like these point towards a team putting up a strong fight towards promotion to League One. This has largely been down to standout individuals such as Jack Payne, Jack Tucker and Kyreece Lisbie.

The culture at the club has also been boosted since the arrival of Danny and Nicky Cowley in early 2024. The latter has been a notable reason for their improvement in league position, as the Cowleys took over at the club amid a battle which threatened Colchester with relegation to the National League.

The defensive unit of the U’s has been especially strong this season. Central defender Jack Tucker, signed last year from this season’s promotion hopefuls Milton Keynes Dons, has been a consistent presence at the back for Colchester’s defence.

As of 2 March, he has made 208 tackles, won 157 aerial duels and made 413 clearances across his 2,970 minutes in all competitions.

At the top of the pitch, Jack Payne and Kyreece Lisbie have 10 goals each with five and four assists respectively.

What has gone wrong?

A lot of Colchester’s dropped points this season have been against teams who have tried to make them uncomfortable.

They have lost a number of games by a goal to nil, where they have conceded and failed to break down the defending of their opponents.

Examples of this include the recent loss to Salford, but also narrow defeats against Grimsby Town, Crewe Alexandra, Barrow, Bromley and Accrington Stanley.

A notable example of this is their 1-0 defeat to Grimsby in January – the Mariners came to Colchester on a run of five consecutive clean sheets in the league and scored just before half-time.

They used their defensive strength to their advantage which was proven by a multitude of clearances and interceptions in the second half, seeing out a 1-0 win despite losing the reverse fixture at Blundell Park.

Colchester’s approach after conceding has been made difficult by compact and well-organised opponents, and this has been worsened by the limited game changers on the bench.

The contrast between this and the ability of typical play-off teams is what has made the difference this season and for fans of the Essex club, this inconsistency has made it tough to predict where Colchester will finish in the table.

This has only been made worse by injuries and a lack of depth. For example, full-back Rob Hunt has been required to play in midfield for the U’s on several occasions, and central defender Frankie Terry was recalled from a loan at Braintree Town.

How Can Colchester United’s Play-off Hopes Be Revived?

Colchester have been good enough statistically, but fragile psychologically.

Too often, narrow defeats against organised opponents have gone uncorrected, and their ability to respond after conceding will define the final stretch of the season.

With margins in League Two being tight, consistency in the run-in will determine whether Colchester are a leading team in the fight for promotion with less than fifteen games to go in the 2025-26 season.
