It’s fair to say that since being relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, things haven’t worked out for Mads Hermansen or Leicester City. Despite conceding 80 goals, Hermansen impressed enough for West Ham United to sign the Dane for £20m.
In theory this move made sense. The Hammers number one Alphonse Areola didn’t have his best season, and their goalkeeping coach worked with Hermansen at Brondby.
However, so far, the move has been a disaster. Hermansen was given four Premier League games to impress in east London.
He looked completely lost in that time, conceding 11 goals before being replaced by Areola. With West Ham desperate to avoid relegation, they’re looking to raise funds to improve their squad.
Bearing this in mind, Hermansen seemed destined for an early exit. But now his future looks far more uncertain.
Despite Alphonse Areola putting in some impressive performances, West Ham have seemingly been after a goalkeeper for a while. It is clear that Nuno Espirito Santo doesn’t rate Hermansen as highly as Graham Potter did.
Espirito Santo’s first goalkeeper target was Al Nassr’s Bento. However, the Brazilian preferred a moved to Genoa in Serie A.
Since then, West Ham have been linked with several shot stoppers including Filip Jorgensen and unbelievably Marc Andre Ter Stegen.
With the World Cup approaching, Jorgensen will want to be starting games. Would he even do that at the London Stadium?
A move for him seems unlikely. As for Ter Stegen, he is seemingly staying in Spain, with a move to Girona on the cards.
Al Nassr have reportedly pulled the plug on Bento’s move to Italy after fellow goalkeeper Nawaf Alaqidi was sent off in a recent fixture. Genoa now look poised to sign Justin Bijlow from Feyenoord, surely ruling out a move for Bento.
Buying a replacement is one thing, but surely Hermansen will have to leave before another goalkeeper is signed. Given his poor performances earlier in the season, will there even be any interest in his services?
Leicester have been very disappointing in the Championship so far. They currently sit in 13th place, six points off of a playoff position. Defensively, they have left a lot to be desired.
Only Sheffield Wednesday have conceded more than their 40 goals.
