Coventry City, nicknamed the Sky Blues are currently placed top of the league in the Sky Bet Championship this season and are currently going from strength to strength with 19 points in 9 games and are now the only unbeaten side in the top 4 leagues. Why have they started their campaign so well ?
Frank Lampard
The Ex-Chelsea legend has been the man at the helm for the club and has certainly managed to transfer all of his bags of experience to the club to do all he can so far in the attempt to achieve their dreams with a spot in the Premier League. He has been a huge figure in their success so far.
Lampard started his managerial career at Derby County where he reached the EFL Championship Play-Off final in the 2018/19 season losing out in a tight 2-1 affair against Aston Villa. Afterwards, on July 4th 2019, he earned himself a spot as head coach with his previous playing club Chelsea where he got them to fourth place and also got the club a spot in the FA Cup final once again losing out this time to rivals Arsenal 2-1.
With other experiences such as Premier League outfit Everton , and another return to Chelsea as caretaker manager, his most recent appointment was at his new successful club Coventry City where he has huge ambitions of reaching the Premier League with the club.
Joining Coventry towards the end of the 2024/25 season, they were 17th in the EFL Sky Bet Championship and just two points from safety. Bringing in a huge effect in their style of play, Lampard managed to get them over the line and guarantee another season in the Championship with some great results at the end of the campaign.
With high hopes this time round, Lampard engraved his expectations into the club which excited the fans with hopes this season. Liam Kitching and Bobby Thomas have received plenty of credit for their performances in their back line this season because of the pair providing a substantial amount of aerial success and defensive ability where they have kept consistency and calmness helping the side this season.
In order to balance out their strong defence and threat in the final third, this is where Coventry’s midfield have also been a vital piece of their squad this season as it is Lampard’s main focus and demand. Matt Grimes has done exceptionally well this season from managing to create plenty of chances per game as well as dominating his area to maintain possession for the side leading out to be a vital midfielder in their key to success. In their strike force, the dynamic duo Brandon Thomas Asante and Haji Wright have been the main reason they have managed to add plenty of goals this season and that is because of their excellent threat they provide upfront. Starting with Thomas-Asante, the forward has managed to bag 5 goals and 3 assists this season in 9 games and is really starting to find his prime potential this season with Coventry after previously struggling to find this with his other EFL clubs, as he has managed to be a huge presence for Coventry this season.
Overall, Thomas-Asante has proved to be an excellent partner alongside Haji Wright who has been the main target this season for the club.
Scoring 8 goals in 9 games, Haji Wright has also had a huge eye for goal this season as the consistent threat he carries has led him to provide support, find his way through the opposition’s back line and cause complete chaos this season. The duo have been a complete overhaul this season scoring plenty of goals for the club and overloading their goal tally so far this season.
Overall, Coventry have built huge momentum and strengths all around their squad this season in all areas of the field, however, they have been helped by their loyal fanbase who have helped them play to their maximum abilities proving to be another huge reason for their success

It is very obvious this season that Coventry have had a huge change in results which is because of their atmosphere change and momentum both home and away supporting their team in return for results. The strong atmosphere at the Coventry Building Society Arena, and especially the South Stand has led them to remain unbeaten at home this season after constantly supporting their team and getting behind them for the full 90 minutes.
Following this up with some excellent numbers, and selling out most weeks, their away support has also helped them gain some crucial results away from home this season as this has led them to gain their top spot so far this season
