Coventry City managed to make it back to back wins for the first time since the end of November, with a 2-1 win over both Leicester City and Millwall respectively. City had to rely on 2 late winner’s by Haji Wright in either game too, with the American now up to 10 for the season.
The Sky Blues came out the box quite quickly yesterday, with newest signing Romain Esse scoring with his first shot on target in a Coventry shirt. Although possession in the first half was dominated by City, Millwall appeared to do more with the ball having 7 shots and 3 on target opposed to Coventry’s 6 shots and 2 on target, both from the same phase of play leading to the goal.
Millwall would make that extra shot on target count, as a brilliant cross by Femi Azeez was flicked in by Mihailo Ivanovic after a quick counter attack, seeming to be the Sky Blues achilles heel at times this season. The second half would start in the same way the first ended, with some pressure being built up by Coventry, but Millwall holding on well.
City would have the ball in the net early on but it would be brought back for an offside against Esse, who was deemed to he interfering with play.
Millwall very quickly found their feet after this, building up dangerous attack after dangerous attack and seemingly pinning Coventry into their own half, as every time they would clear it the 6’4 Jake Cooper and 6’3 Tristan Crama would recycle possession back to the Coventry box.
This pressure would last until the 70th minute when Coventry manager Frank Lampard brought on Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Victor Torp, which would prove to be the momentum swinger as in the 78th minute Haji Wright would fire in the winner after a cross by Sakamoto.
The Sky Blues now move onto 58 points and are still top of the league.
Coventry don’t have a great record against their next opponent in Norwich City, with the last time they were victorious over the Canaries being in 2009, with a winner from loanee Jordan Henderson at Carrow Road.
With both teams winning their last 2 games, they go into this fixture with a similar level of optimism, however with Norwich being the home team and having such a good record over their opponents, you would imagine that they have the slight mental edge.
If the Sky Blues win, they will move onto 61 points and could end the day 9 points clear of second and 11 of automatics if results go their way. On the flip side, Norwich could end the day on 33 points and 5 clear of 22nd place Blackburn.
