Danny Rohl Latest: Manager Set to Leave Sheffield Wednesday

Danny Rohl latest: Sheffield Wednesday are preparing to part ways with head coach Danny Röhl as tensions behind the scenes continue to escalate at Hillsborough.

Röhl’s future has been uncertain throughout the summer, with interest from clubs such as Middlesbrough, Southampton, and Leicester City. Reports also suggested a potential return to Germany was being considered, reflecting how unclear his situation had become.

The 35-year-old was absent for the start of pre-season but returned to Middlewood Road earlier this week to resume duties. However, according to Football League World, his comeback didn’t go down well within the dressing room. Some players were reportedly uneasy about his return, prompting internal meetings to try and resolve growing discontent. Despite those efforts, the atmosphere has remained strained.

This internal unrest comes at a time when the club is already dealing with serious financial and structural issues. Wednesday have spent the summer mired in off-pitch problems — including missed wage payments, financial embargoes, and uncertainty over whether chairman Dejphon Chansiri intends to sell the club. Recruitment has been non-existent, with no new players arriving, and the team is severely limited in its ability to strengthen due to transfer restrictions.

Now, just days after Röhl’s return, EFL Analysis reports that the manager’s position is once again under review. With clear-the-air talks failing to ease tensions, it’s believed the club no longer sees Röhl’s role as sustainable, and sources have described his situation as “untenable.” Talks are ongoing to determine whether he will be formally released or placed on gardening leave.

From a financial perspective, the decision to part ways now is a blow — Röhl’s reported £5 million release clause, a valuable asset in the current financial climate, will be forfeited.

Who will take charge at Wednesday?

In the wake of Röhl’s expected exit, assistant coach Henrik Pedersen is expected to step into the head coach role. Pedersen signed a new contract last week, which had already sparked speculation about his growing influence at the club. Now it appears he’s set to take charge of first-team affairs.

While Pedersen is said to be well-liked by the players and may help steady the ship internally, he inherits a squad that has been weakened by the departures of Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba. The club’s recruitment options are extremely limited, with loan deals and free-agent signings the only realistic avenues due to the ongoing embargo.

In what has already been a summer of disarray for Wednesday, the exit of Röhl is yet another twist in a saga that shows no signs of settling. With so much up in the air at S6, the coming weeks could prove critical in shaping the direction of the club.
