Derby County manager John Eustace provides a full injury update and squad news as the Rams prepare for an important away game.

John Eustace has provided a comprehensive injury update on Derby County ahead of their trip to Watford this weekend.
The Rams boss confirmed that goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, defenders Sondre Langas and Max Johnston are all unavailable, while striker Carlton Morris has returned to contention following a long-term ankle injury.
The Rams currently sit sixth in the Championship table and will be keen to maintain their impressive away form at Vicarage Road, making these injury updates particularly crucial as Derby look to consolidate a play-off position.
Goalkeeper Zetterstrom has not played since the 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion.
He was forced to withdraw from the warm-up before the win over Charlton Athletic, and although he returned briefly, lingering effects from a virus have prevented him from fully reintegrating into the squad.
Eustace was keen to dismiss speculation linking the goalkeeper’s absence to transfers or off-field issues.
“Jacob is still struggling with his virus. I know there’s been lots of people thinking there’s been other things going on which is ridiculous.
He has been a really important part of the squad, but Josh (Vickers) has stepped up.
Unfortunately, with Jacob’s virus, it has just caused other issues from a contact point of view, which isn’t allowing him to fully train properly.”
Despite the setback, Zetterstrom is making progress in training, with Eustace optimistic about his eventual return.
“He’s making good progress and I’m really looking forward to seeing when he’ll be back in and pushing for that number one spot again.
He is on the grass, he has done some training, but won’t be available to compete yet in a competitive game.”
In his absence, Josh Vickers has impressed between the sticks, providing Derby with reliable cover and helping maintain defensive stability.
Langas has been sidelined since picking up a hamstring injury in the clash with West Brom.
Eustace revealed the defender suffered “quite a big tear” to his tendon, meaning Derby are taking a cautious approach to his rehabilitation.
“He’s making fantastic progress so I think it’ll be after the international break, unfortunately, when he’ll be back in with us.”
The Norwegian’s absence removes a key presence in central defence, forcing Derby to rely on alternative options for the upcoming fixtures.
Langas’ recovery is being managed carefully to avoid aggravating the injury, which could otherwise result in an even longer lay-off.
Johnston’s season has been disrupted by multiple setbacks.
The full-back initially suffered a hamstring injury during the win over Queens Park Rangers, targeting a January comeback, but a subsequent calf problem has delayed his return.
“Max is probably very similar. Hopefully after the next international break, both of those players will be back in with the group,” said Eustace.
Johnston’s absence limits Derby’s attacking options from full-back and reduces rotation possibilities, particularly as the Rams prepare for a series of demanding matches.
His return will provide both defensive solidity and the ability to support forward play.
There was a boost for Derby in attack, with Carlton Morris returning as a substitute last weekend after a long lay-off due to an ankle injury.
Eustace confirmed that the striker is now in contention for selection against Watford, adding a potent option to the Rams’ forward line.
Morris’ availability gives Derby extra firepower as they aim to maintain momentum in the play-off race. His return is expected to relieve pressure on other attacking players and allow Eustace greater tactical flexibility.
Derby enter the weekend fixture with only three players sidelined, but the impact of their absences is significant.
Zetterstrom’s continued absence means reliance on Vickers, while Langas and Johnston’s injuries test squad depth in defence.
Eustace’s cautious approach reflects the club’s priority of ensuring players are fully fit for the long-term, rather than risking short-term gains.
The international break next month is a key marker for potential returns, which could provide a timely boost ahead of the season’s decisive stages.
“We are managing their progress carefully, and the squad has been excellent in adapting while waiting for reinforcements,” Eustace said.
Derby’s strong away form and current league position highlight their resilience, even with key players missing. Maintaining consistency until reinforcements return will be vital as the Rams look to push for a play-off finish.
