Bristol Rovers boss Steve Evans gave his new Dutch signing his first minutes in last night’s 1-0 loss to MK Dons.
Bristol Rovers have announced the permanent signing of Dutch forward Mees Rijks, signing a contract till 2028 with an option to extend a year.
The striker opted for blue and white quarters over the royal blue he plays for currently in Norway.
Rijks has already moved countries to get the best out of his career, moving from Netherlands to Norway in 2024.
Speaking to BRTV the Dutchman said “It feels great [to be here.]”
“For me it was quiet an easy decision to make, because I love English football, first of all. It’s a big city, great club, a lot of history and a lot of passion involved and I love that.
“They were really nice and clear and I’m just feeling ready.”
On the comparison to moving to England with Norway, he said “I think it’s a bit easier because I understand the language and I like the English culture a lot. I think it really suits me, I feel at home already.”
Steve Evans gave him his first game in yesterdays 1-0 loss to MK Dons, bringing him onto the pitch in the 63rd minute. The striker had one chance fall to him however his shot was fired over the top of the crossbar.
Standing at 6ft 2 the striker will add some much needed height to Steve Evans attack. Rovers have been crying out for a tall attacking player for Fabrizio Cavegn who is struggling to be effective with the long ball he is receiving throughout games.
With Promise Omochere supposing returning on Saturday for the Newport game. Rijks will have more competition when he returns with Omochere showing his class whenever he plays however has been ruled out for several months after going off injured back in September against Colchester United.
Rijks first game at home will be Rovers must-win game against Newport. A great opportunity to endear himself to the Gashead’s who will be there in their numbers to back their team and a goal from him could be the perfect way to do that.
