Dutch Midfielder Set To Join Luton Town

Luton have been heavily linked with signing Dutch midfielder Davy Van Den Berg on deadline day, with one source claiming the transfer is “almost certain” to happen.

Mike McGrath has also claimed Luton have bid for the midfielder, making the transfer more likely to happen.

This comes after midfielder Lamine Fanne left the club on Sunday evening, leaving the door open for a midfielder to join.

Van Den Berg isn’t the only midfielder to be heavily linked with the Hatters on deadline day, with Barnsley captain, Luca Connell being heavily linked, however it looks like a deal isn’t going to materialise.

A deal for Connell could’ve involved Jacob Brown going the other way, however it seems both deals are off, with Brown instead heading to Portsmouth on a permanent deal.

Luton have also been heavily linked to Aberdeen midfielder Leighton Clarkson, however a deal looks “unlikely” due to the clubs respective valuations of the player.

With a deal for Van Den Berg seeming close, I looked at what he can bring Luton.

What can Van Den Berg bring to Luton Town?

Van Den Berg joined FC Utrecht in summer 2025, however has struggled for playing time during his spell at the club.

He has played for the club just once in 2026 so far, coming off the bench to appear against Celtic in the Europa League.

Van Den Berg primarily operates as a defensive midfielder, however he is also known to play higher up the pitch too, being a very similar mould of player to Lamine Fanne, who recently left the club.

He gives Luton much needed squad depth, with Jordan Clark, Liam Walsh, Kasey Palmer and George Saville being the only fit centre midfielder options at the club, with Marvelous Nakamba seeming like he will make a move to Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day.

Van Den Berg is also left footed, something Luton lack In a creative midfielder, with George Saville being a more holding option in midfield, therefore Van Den Berg gives more versatility to the Hatters squad.
