Three Players Exeter City Could Sign In January 2026

Exeter City may look towards the transfer market this January, as the side look to boost their league position.

Exeter City

Exeter City are in need of a couple new signings in order to try shoot up the table to avoid a relegation battle.

Take a look below at three signings that Gary Caldwell’s Grecians could try tempt to St James’ Park.

Angus MacDonald – Permanent

Exeter City could turn towards 33 year-old centre back, Angus MacDonald, as the club seek for defensive reinforcement after Sil Swinkels was recalled by parent club Aston Villa.

MacDonald is available on a free transfer after his last spell with Exeter, where he impressed highly under Gary Caldwell towards the end of last season.

MacDonald is somewhat of an EFL vetran, having stints at Swindon Town, Rotherham United, Hull City, and Barnsley in recent years.

Angus is a well appreciated player in Devon due to his efforts last season, and would be welcomed back with open arms by the Exeter faithful.

Recently the 33-year-old has returned to St James’ Park to support his old teammates, having being spotted by supporters in the famous Big Bank.

MacDonald has recently featured in the Ballers League for N5 FC.

Romelle Donovan – Loan

Exeter City could go shopping at Brentford again as Romelle Donovan is a highly regarded player who could add some attacking spark to Gary Caldwell’s ranks.

Donovan, 19, spent some of last season on loan at fellow League One strugglers Burton Albion where he made 9 appearances for The Brewers, scoring his first senior goal at the club.

Caldwell has been known to like to use exciting young players, having players such as Jay Stansfield and Tristan Crama on loan whilst managing Exeter.

The Grecians have a good relationship with the London outfit, having loaned players such as Ryan Trevitt, Tony Yogane, Ethan Brierley, and Tristan Crama to the club.

Donovan could get calls from a couple EFL sides, and it would not suprise us if Gary Caldwell comes calling for him.

Abdul Abdulmalik – Permanent

Abdul Abdulmalik has set fire to the National League this season, with the young winger registering 10 goal contributions in 23 matches.

The 22-year-old has had many praising his name this season, with supporters classing him as one of the brightest attacking players in the league.

Boreham Wood fan favourite Abdulmalik could have plenty of clubs snooping around him this January, meaning if Exeter City wanted him they would have to act fast.

Previously, Exeter City have gone shopping in the National League for players such as Reece Cole and Edward Francis, so it could be one to keep an eye out for.
