Five Championship Players Who Become Free Agents This Summer

As the season nears its end, several players in the EFL Championship are approaching the final months of their contracts. Here are five players who become Championship free agents this summer.

Championship Free Agents: Josh Maja (West Bromwich Albion)

Signed in the summer of 2023 on a free transfer from French Ligue 1 club Bordeaux, Maja joined the club in the hopes to become West Brom’s talisman.

Injuries and fitness issues have derailed his career at West Brom, with the striker scoring just 14 goals in 64 appearances for the Baggies over his three-year stint.

The now 27-year-old could be looking to revitalize his career with a move away from the West Midlands. Now in his prime, the striker will be hoping a club is willing to take a chance on him.

Championship Free Agents: Patson Daka (Leicester City)

One of the most notable upcoming Championship free agents. The striker signed for a reported fee of £23 million in 2021 and joined Leicester City fresh off their FA Cup victory. He made his debut for the Foxes in the Community Shield final against Manchester City, which they also went on to win.

The Zambian international has scored 19 goals in 123 appearances for the Foxes. Having played as a backup to Leicester legend Jamie Vardy for five years of his Leicester career, he has had big boots to fill since Vardy’s departure last season.

The striker, who has experienced European football and relegation from the Premier League with Leicester, could be looking for a fresh start. As it is not certain whether Leicester will be in the Championship next season, will Daka be willing to take the step down into League One?

Championship Free Agents: Dael Fry (Middlesbrough)

The Middlesbrough-born defender has spent his whole career at the Teesside club, racking up 245 appearances since joining the first team in 2014.

The centre-back, whose contract expires at the end of the season, could be a solid choice for many EFL clubs looking for an experienced defender who has also represented England at every youth level.

Fry has appeared 21 times this season, mainly serving as a rotation player behind Adlison Malanda and Luke Ayling.

Middlesbrough, who look destined to return to the Premier League, leave Fry’s chances of having his contract renewed slim, as the club will be looking to sign players ready for top-flight football.

Championship Free Agents: Jed Wallace (West Bromwich Albion)

The experienced EFL winger Jed Wallace could be a fantastic addition to a mid-table EFL club looking for a solid winger with an eye for goal.

The Englishman, who has appeared over 400 times in the EFL, sees his contract come to an end at the end of the season. The 31-year-old has made a respectable 127 appearances for West Brom, scoring 15 goals over the four years he has spent at The Hawthorns.

Wallace, who is currently the captain at West Brom, has appeared 20 times this season for the club, scoring twice. The former Millwall man will be looking to continue his career at the top end of the EFL if West Brom decide not to renew his contract at the end of the season.

Championship Free Agents: Tom Davies (Sheffield United)

The former Everton academy graduate left Merseyside for Sheffield United in the summer of 2023 on a three-year deal.

The 27-year-old, who played over 150 times in the Premier League for Everton, left after rejecting a new deal and joined newly promoted side Sheffield United on a three-year deal, seeking a fresh start in his career.

The midfielder has struggled to make an impact at Bramall Lane, making only 29 appearances in three years and scoring just one goal in that time.

Many EFL clubs could see Davies as a fantastic free addition to their squad if he leaves the Blades at the end of the season, with the Englishman having a point to prove to get back to his best.
