Bristol Rovers recorded their first away victory since new years day with goals from Fabrizio Cavegn and Tommy Leigh either side of the half. Here are five talking points from the victory.
Cavegn scored his first goal for the Gas since the end of January. The Swiss international slid in to make contact with Joel Senior’s square ball across the box.
The striker has fallen out of favour in the past few games, with Evans opting for the physical partnership of Joe Quigley and Ellis Harrison.
However he came back with a bang, increasing his goal tally to 14 goals in all competitions. The 23-year-old did miss a great chance a few minutes earlier but Gasheads will cut him some slack with the amount of goals he’s scored already.
The Scotsman made three changes to the side after their late victory at Crewe, although they weren’t the changes many would have expected.
Riley Harbottle and Shaq Forde remained out of the side with Cavegn, Leigh and Ryan De Havilland coming in.
Gasheads have been waiting on the return for the duo with Evans saying they were fit last week.
The three he bought into the team were the same as his half-time subs at home to Crewe, with Yusuf Akhamrich, Kane Thompson-Sommers and Ellis Harrison especially needing a break.
Rovers kept their sixth clean sheet of the season. Their win in Cumbria highlights the strength in defence, limiting their opponents to only three shots on target, with Brad Young having very little to do.
At times, the defence has been nothing short of abysmal. Their worst being conceding 12 goals in a three-game period.
However, it seems Evans has found the key to making the defence resolute hard to break. Although it must be said Barrow were extremely poor, the defence did not allow them to build any momentum.
Joel Senior and Jack Sparkes worked their socks off in the game. The pair each got an assist today. Sparkes lofting the ball to the back post where Leigh smashed it in.
Whereas Cavegn’s goal came from Seniors marauding run forward before laying up Cavegn. In the past two games, the duo have been excellent and a big reason for Rovers’ upturn in form.
This piece couldn’t have been finished without mentioning Tommy Leigh with his third goal in two games. After his heroics against Crewe, the midfielder continued where he left off.
Connecting to Sparkes lofted ball at the back post in the 27th minute. He was a constant thorn in Barrow’s side and was frequently involved in his first 90 minute game for the club.
A few days ago TheLowerTiers ranked Tommy Leigh a 5/10 after his lack of game time but it’s safe to say that rating would have changed recently after his last two games.
